Anura Priyadarshana Yapa has been appointed General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva announced at a hastily organized press conference at party headquarters yesterday.<\/p>\n

Six party stalwarts including, John Seneviratne, Nimal Siripala de Silva, AHM Fowzie, Dallas Allahaperuma, Susil Premjayanth and Anura Priyadarshana Yapa took the head table 45 minutes behind schedule to make the announcement.<\/p>\n

The newly appointed General Secretary will assume duties ceremonially at the party headquarters at an auspicious time yet to be determined.<\/p>\n

Addressing the press, Minister de Silva said, “The SLFP is not unaccustomed to having its general secretaries leaving ever since CP de Silva quit.”<\/p>\n

“The Common Candidate is a mega teledrama where the script is written by Ranil Wickremasinghe and the main actor is Maithripala Sirisena. But he has only seen the script for episode one,” SLFP Treasurer Dallas Alahaperuma said.<\/p>\n

“Maithripala Sirisena has been misled by both the opposition and a western conspiracy to destabilize the country. This is the man under whose signature the name of Mahinda Rajapaksa was to be proposed as the SLFP candidate at the next presidential election. We are saddened by his decision.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Asked for details of the `conspiracy,\u2019 the SLFP stalwarts said: “We will provide details in due course and at the right time”.<\/p>\n

“In this backdrop it is the UNP voter who has been abandoned,” said Susil Premajanth. “The Grand Old Party that led Sri Lanka to Independence had abandoned the aspirations of its voter base.”<\/p>\n

Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva and John Seneviratne both said they will not leave the party “even if Mahinda Rajapaksa does.”<\/p>\n
