The Joint Opposition Front (JOF) to contest the next Presidential Election was expected to be formally established on Friday, informed sources said.<\/p>\n

The parties to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) based on a six-point programme, would include the United National Party(UNP), Jathika Hela Urumaya(JHU), National Movement for Social Justice(NMSJ), Democratic Peoples Front(DPF), Nava Sihala Urumaya(NSU), National Unity Alliance(NUA) and Eksath Janatha Peramuna(EJP).<\/p>\n

Arjuna Ranatunga MP, was also expected to sign the MoU the sources said, adding that a consensus had emerged among the parties that UNP Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya should be named the JOF\u2019s Common candidate. <\/strong>“The formation of a strong Opposition Front is more important than who our candidate is since the objective is to abolish the executive presidency which has been the main cause for the chaos resulting from the deteriorating law and order situation and rampant corruption at the highest levels.”<\/p>\n

Asked why the JVP which was also opposed to a presidential system of government would not be a signatory to the JOF MoU, the sources replied they were confident that the JVP would eventually back the JOF\u2019s presidential candidate.<\/p>\n

They observed that even though some in the UNP wanted their party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to be the common candidate, its Working Committee which was due to meet after a presidential poll was announced was expected to ratify whoever the JOF picked to lead its campaign.<\/p>\n

The JOF\u2019s six-point programme would comprise the abolition of the executive presidency, reverting to a Westminster system of government with a Cabinet of Ministers answerable to Parliament, re-establishment of all the Independent Commissions which were abolished by the 18th Amendment to the Constitution, changes to the electoral system, eliminating corruption and revival of the economy.
