TIMELINE OF EVENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

9:52 a.m. Gunfire at the National War Memorial. Reporter there said he saw one man go down and another run. He heard four shots.<\/p>\n

9:54 a.m. Gunfire in Parliament\u2019s Centre Block.<\/p>\n

9:56 a.m. Reports of dozens of shots fired in Parliament. A reporter sees a motionless body on the ground outside the Library of Parliament.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, at the War Memorial, reports emerge that it is a soldier that was shot.<\/p>\n

9:58 a.m. CPR being performed on the soldier by passersby.<\/p>\n

9:59 a.m. Confirmed that \u201cactive shooter\u201d still in the halls of Parliament.<\/p>\n

10:00 a.m. Ottawa police tactical unit arrives at Parliament Hill.<\/p>\n

10:04 a.m. Witnesses at War Memorial say they saw the assailant run towards Parliament Hill carrying a large rifle.<\/p>\n

10:05 a.m. A police officer at the War Memorial confirms to colleague in walkie talkie: \u201cDND member down.\u201d Officers shout \u201cthere is a shooter on the loose\u201d and clears the area.<\/p>\n

10:07 a.m. Reporters moved into the lobby of the House for safety, MPs remain in caucus chambers.<\/p>\n

10:12 a.m. Parliament Hill is officially in lockdown.<\/p>\n

10: 13 a.m. Witnesses at War Memorial say the alleged assailant was a man with dark hair and a scarf on his head, carrying a \u201chuge rifle.\u201d Last seen running toward Parliament Hill. Police urge everyone to stay away, saying \u201cyou are in danger here.\u201d<\/p>\n

10:18 a.m. Suspect\u2019s car is identified, parked on Wellington Street in front of the Hill. The grey Toyota Corolla has neither front nor back license plates. Some witnesses said they saw two shooters emerge from the vehicles. Inside the House of Commons, police search every room that wasn\u2019t locked at time of the shooting.<\/p>\n

10:19 a.m. Witnesses say that the suspect seen at War Memorial looked about 5 foot 9 or 1, overweight with a black jacket and a long rifle. He had a scarf covering his face and headed toward the House of Commons lawn. Others say he was wearing a hoodie and a bandana covering his face and had long hair. Reports that the shooter had a \u201cdark complexion.\u201d<\/p>\n

10:24 a.m. A Parliament cafeteria worker reports seeing a man drive up to the Hill in a black Chrysler and enter Parliament armed with a hunting rifle.<\/p>\n

10:25 a.m. RCMP issues statement advising people keep away from Parliament Hill due to an \u201congoing police incident.\u201d At this point, it is believed the shooter or shooters are still on the loose. Outside near the National War Memorial, construction worker and witness Barry Willis said a man pointed a gun at him. He said he heard five or six shots and the shooter\u2019s headscarf was blue and white. Meanwhile in Parliament, witnesses report hearing 10 to 15 shots.<\/p>\n

10:30 a.m. Unconfirmed reports emerge that the gunman at Parliament\u2019s Centre Block has been shot and killed.<\/p>\n

10:33 a.m. Witnesses say they saw shooter stop a black sedan at the East Block, order the driver out, and drove that vehicle to the Centre Block.<\/p>\n

10:37 a.m. Confirmed that Prime Minister Stephen Harper got out safely and that MPs were gathered in a caucus meeting when they heard shots fired. Evacuations begin. People standing along Elgin Street just south of the memorial are frisked by police. All the streets surrounding Parliament Hill and the memorial also on lockdown. This includes all buildings and businesses.<\/p>\n

10:41 a.m. It\u2019s confirmed that Liberal leader Justin Trudeau is in a \u201csafe and secure location\u201d his spokesperson says. Also confirmed that NDP Leader of the Opposition, Tom Mulcair is also safe and in a secure location.<\/p>\n

10:42 a.m. Shooter is still on the loose. \u201cThere\u2019s an active shooter, we haven\u2019t got it contained yet,\u201d an officer tells the Ottawa Citizen\u2019s Glen McGregor.<\/p>\n

10:47 a.m. \u201cThere\u2019s a guy running around with a gun,\u201d an officer tells the National Post\u2019s John Ivison. \u201cThere are multiple assailants. I know it\u2019s not a secure scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

10:49 a.m. Prime Minister\u2019s staff receive email ordering them to stay put. \u201cThere are currently active shooters in the Parliament Hill vicinity,\u201d the email reads.<\/p>\n

10:53 a.m. RCMP advises citizens to \u201cstay off rooftops and away from windows in the downtown core\u201d and to avoid the area entirely.<\/p>\n

11:02 a.m. People in buildings surrounding Parliament Hill and the National War Memorial told to stay away from windows.<\/p>\n

11:07 a.m. Ottawa police orders public and media off the sidewalks at Queen and Metcalfe Streets, yelling \u201cEverybody inside! There\u2019s possibly somebody down the street!\u201d according to Postmedia reporter Jason Feteke.<\/p>\n

11:10 a.m. Kevin Vickers, the sergeant-at-arms for the House of Commons has shot an assailant, the Canadian Press reports.<\/p>\n

11:13 a.m. Police have guns drawn again near the Hill\u2019s East Block, between the Chateau Laurier and Parliament Hill. The University of Ottawa and Rideau Centre shopping mall both locked down.<\/p>\n

11:15 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. It is confirmed that one shooter is dead in the Centre Block, another suspect still on the loose.<\/p>\n

11:22 a.m. Reports of more gunshots fired by the Chateau Laurier hotel. It is also reported that the gates at CFB Halifax have been chained and locked. All Ottawa schools are locked down.<\/p>\n

11:30 a.m. Press gallery tells reporters \u201cIf your door does not lock, find a way to barricade the door, if possible. Do not open a door under any circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

11:34 a.m. The Globe and Mail reports a second shooter has been shot by police.<\/p>\n

11:36 a.m. All military bases across the country closed.<\/p>\n

11:41 a.m. Shootings have occurred at three different sites downtown, police say \u2014 The National War Memorial, Parliament\u2019s Centre Block and near downtown Ottawa\u2019s mall, The Rideau Centre. Police say the events happened very close together. (Police later clarified and said there was not a third shooting at The Rideau Centre)
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

11:49 a.m. United States president Barack Obama has been briefed on the shooting at Canada\u2019s Parliament. The United States embassy is also in lockdown mode.<\/p>\n

12:04 p.m. Police rush to Rideau Centre entrance, guns drawn.<\/p>\n

12:08 p.m. Meanwhile, MPs and reporters still on lockdown in Parliament.<\/p>\n

12:12 p.m. Ottawa Civic hospital confirmed to CBC that two victims were en route to hospital, one of them shot. Both were in non-life threatening condition.<\/p>\n

12:30 p.m. Prime Minister issues a statement saying he is safe and not on Parliament Hill. He promises to make a statement later in the day. Planned ceremony to honour Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai today in Toronto has been cancelled.<\/p>\n

1:03 p.m. Soldier shot at National War Memorial reported dead in hospital. Witness described the wounds incurred by Canadian Forces\u2019 member \u201ccatastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n

1:30 p.m. The NHL cancels the evening hockey game between the Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs due to the shootings. It was to be held in Ottawa.<\/p>\n

1:39 p.m. Parliament\u2019s Centre Block remains under lockdown. Those still there report a lot of banging around them; the sound of battering rams. People told not to open doors under *any* circumstances.<\/p>\n

1: 49 p.m. Rideau Centre lockdown lifts.<\/p>\n

1:51 p.m. NBC News confirms that President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have spoken about the incident by phone.<\/p>\n

1:52 p.m. Ottawa police clarifies there were shooting incidents at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill but NOT at the Rideau Centre. \u201cOne shooting victim succumbed to injuries,\u201d the statement read. \u201cHe was a member of the Canadian Forces. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones. The victim\u2019s identification will not be released until next of kin notification is completed. One male suspect has also been confirmed deceased. There is no further update on injuries at this time.\u201d They issued a plea for any and all tips regarding the shooting incidents.<\/p>\n

1:53 p.m. The NDP issues a statement in response to the shootings. \u201cThis morning\u2019s horrifying attack has shocked all Canadians and shattered the peace of our nation\u2019s capital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the soldier killed and the people who were injured, and we are deeply grateful for the soldiers and law enforcement officials who quickly and courageously protected the public today.\u201d<\/p>\n

2:03 p.m. Ottawa police confirm one suspect is dead, no one is in custody and the situation is ongoing. A Canadian Forces officer is confirmed dead.<\/p>\n

2:06 p.m. British Prime Minister David Cameron tweets his condolences and support for Canada following Wednesday\u2019s attack.<\/p>\n

2:11 p.m. The downtown core is \u201cstill not secure\u201d according to another security briefing. All buildings remain on lockdown.<\/p>\n

2:15 p.m. Ottawa Police and RCMP press conference begins. Ottawa mayor Jim Watson is also there. The Canadian Forces soldier shot at the war memorial suffered fatal injuries. Authorities did not release identity and age, pending notification of next of kin. The first 911 calls came in at 9:52 a.m. Then came the Parliament Hill shooting, and the male suspect there is now dead. They say the operation is ongoing and it\u2019s a \u201cdynamic and unfolding situation.\u201d Officers stress that Canadians be vigilant and report all suspicious behaviour. Mayor Watson says answers will come as the events are deconstructed. Police couldn\u2019t yet say if there was only one shooter and if it was the same shooter in both places. Police also admit that the attack took them by surprise. They would not specifically say if a suspect was still on the loose, but asked the public to be aware, vigilant and to report suspicious activity. It is also too early, they said, to speculate on motive or intended targets. Police couldn\u2019t say if the suspect was a Canadian citizen or not.<\/p>\n
