General Secretary of Ravana Balaya, Ven. Saddhatissa Thera accused the management of Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) of failing to ensure the safety of migrant workers in Middle East countries.<\/p>\n

Following last Thursday\u2019s incident at the SLBFE where the Buddhist monks led by Saddhatissa Thera had a heated argument with the Bureau Chairman Amal Senadhilankara over the issues faced by the migrant workers in the Middle East countries, Saddhatissa Thera said that Senadhilankara was over agitated as he (Saddhatissa Thera) had to reveal the truth of the fate of our migrant workers in the Middle East countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll our attempts to meet Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera to discuss these issues failed and that was why we informed SLBFE Chairman\u2019s office that we want to meet him.<\/p>\n

It was Senadhilankara\u2019s Secretary who gave us the appointment to meet him. However, the Chairman was unable to give us statistics of our migrant workers and was over agitated since we have to reveal the truth about how our migrant workers are suffering in the Middle East,\u201d Saddhatissa Thera said.<\/p>\n

According to the Thera, most of the female migrant workers are being used as sex slaves by the employers and added that the SLBFE has shown no interest to send back the suffering maids to Sri Lanka at the request of their families. \u201cWe have been told by the families in Sri Lanka how the SLBFE representatives in these countries ignore the complaints of our migrant workers. When these females escape from their employers and come to our foreign missions in their respective countries, the SLBFE representatives are alleged to have sold them for sex and earn money or have sent them to another employer.<\/p>\n

It is the sole responsibility of the SLFEB officers there to look after these foreign exchange earners instead of harassing and sending them to another place of work with out the worker\u2019s consent,\u201d the Thera said.<\/p>\n

He further accused the SLBFE for not taking any action against the unscrupulous job agencies that have sent our migrant workers to vulnerable employers and challenge the bureau to name one job agency they have blacklisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were many cases where our migrant workers had to return to the country either empty handed or subjected to mental and physical anguish. Even there are instances where our workers have been tortured and murdered.<\/p>\n

What action has the SLBFE taken against the job agencies that have sent these workers abroad? To our knowledge none of the job agencies have been blacklisted. There is a scam going on at the SLBFE,\u201d he claimed. All attempts to contact SLBFE Chairmen Amal Senadhilankara for a comment failed as he was continuously at meetings.<\/p>\n
