He is credited with having revived the Catholic faith in the country.

The Vatican said Wednesday that Francis approved the decision by the Vatican’s saint-making office to canonise Vaz. The process was the same Francis used to canonise St. John XXIII without a second miracle attributed to his intercession.

Francis has waived Vatican saint-making rules on several occasions and has promised to give Asia more saints.

Vaz rescued and expanded the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, one of the five officially crowned Marian Shrines of the Church. It was crowned for its fame for miracles and for pilgrimages in 1924, even before Fatima.

He is the first non-European native in modern times to found a Mission and Church in a ‘Third World’ country, to found a fully-native Catholic Religious Congregation and to be given the official title of ‘Apostle’ (of Kanara and Sri Lanka) by the Church, for his work in rescuing the Church.

**********************

Sainthood of Joseph Vaz Imminent says Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith

The canonisation of Blessed Joseph Vaz will be completed soon and he would be raised to sainthood at a ceremony presided over by Pope Francis, Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith told journalists at the first media briefing on the impending visit of the Holy Father at the Archbishop’s House on Friday September 12th.

He said that canonisation is a long process and it needs miraculous intervention. The saving of the life of one of the twins overseas through the intercession of Fr. Joseph Vaz led to the beginning of the canonisation process.

“The process is going on and we are hopeful that it will be completed prior to the visit of the Holy Father”, the Cardinal said. Blessed Joseph Vaz hailed as the Apostle of Sri Lanka will be the first Sri Lankan by adoption to be raised to sainthood.

Joesph Vaz, an Oratorian priest from India played a pivotal role in reviving the Catholic faith in Sri Lanka during the Dutch persecution in the 17th century.
