NEW DELHI, September 4:<\/strong> Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Chairman of the ruling party\u2019s national strategic committee Dr Subramanian Swamy says the mechanised fishing boats seized by the Sri Lankan Navy from Tamil Nadu fishermen actually belong to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayaram Jayalalithaa and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader TR Balu.<\/p>\n

He made this controversial claim in an interview to a Chennai Tamil TV channel on Monday, and promptly kicked up a minor political storm.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Dr Swamy wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clear the air over his controversial statement that it was he who had advised Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa not to release the boats of Tamil Nadu fishermen while setting them free.<\/p>\n

“The reason I did not press for the release of these mechanized fishing boats is that it is mostly owned by DMK\u2019s TR Baalu and Jayalalithaa\u2019s resident friend Sasikala. Since they are empowered and rich persons, and did not petition me anyway, I concentrated on the release of the poor unprotected fishermen,” he said.<\/p>\n

Balu, who underwent a surgery recently and is recuperating, couldn\u2019t be reached for his response.<\/p>\n

In the letter to Modi, Dr Swamy said that the Tamil Nadu fishermen\u2019s association had submitted a petition to him seeking the release of fishermen caught in Sri Lankan waters.<\/p>\n

He said his success in getting the arrested fishermen released has rattled Jayalalithaa, “who had made a business of the plight of fishermen by doing nothing about it except writing letters to you, and earlier to Manmohan Singh, and releasing to the press.”<\/p>\n

The BJP leader alleged that the chief minister saw this success as threatening her political position in the impending Assembly polls.<\/p>\n

Jayalalithaa took exception to Dr Swamy\u2019s reported remarks in the televised interview. “It is particularly distressing,” she said. “This statement of Swamy has given rise to resentment and angst not only among the fishing community but also among people of Tamil Nadu.” She expressed confidence that Dr Swamy\u2019s view is not the official position of the BJP or the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.<\/p>\n

In his letter to Modi, Dr Swamy has also criticized Jayalalithaa for appropriating to herself as her achievement his hard work on issues such as the Mullaperiyar dam, installation of the Thevar statue in Parliament and the 2G spectrum scam.<\/p>\n

“She has even claimed that she saved Rama Setu. The disinformation let loose in her controlled media was successful because I did not challenge her on this misappropriation of credit for the work I had done,” Dr Swamy said.<\/p>\n
