The United National Party is caught up in a fresh dilemma with Sajith Premadasa, who is likely to be appointed as the Deputy Leader of the party soon, proposing to abolish the Leadership Council of the party.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Premadasa has also demanded that 10 members, nominated by him, should be appointed to the Working Committee of the party, simultaneously with his appointment as Deputy Leader of the UNP.<\/p>\n

With these two conditions, a serious question arises over the future of Karu Jayasuriya, who is presently the Chairman of the party\u2019s Leadership Council. The Leadership Council is entrusted with the task of handling strategic operation of the UNP.<\/p>\n

Jayasuriya is widely recognized by political analysts as a politician who is able to garner the support of Sinhala-Buddhist voters at any national level election.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, UNP sources confirmed with \u2018The Nation\u2019 that UNP Colombo District Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has vehemently protested Premadasa\u2019s appointment as the Deputy Leader of the party dubbing it as a move that would create far-reaching problems.<\/p>\n

When contacted by \u2018The Nation\u2019. Karunanayake asserted the party should not worry about positions or individuals. \u201dInstead,\u201d he said, \u201cthe party should be interested in an effort that would bring the UNP into power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karunanayake also added that Premadasa, who represents the district of Hambanthota, has close links with some top echelons of the government.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has been provided with extra security and cars by the government. And I have information about a lot of insider dealings with the government and I will declare those at the correct time,\u201d Karunanayake charged.<\/p>\n

UNP sources told \u2018The Nation\u2019 that Karunanayake has threatened to step down from the party, if and when Premadasa is appointed as the Deputy Leader of the party, making him the second most powerful person in the party hierarchy.<\/p>\n

However, UNP\u2019s official spokesperson Gayantha Karunathilake squashed speculation about Premadasa\u2019s appointment as the Deputy Leader.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe so-called new designations in the party are rumors and the Working Committee, which is the main decision making body of the UNP, did not even meet in the month of August as the members were extremely busy with the election campaign,\u201d Karunathilake explained.<\/p>\n

He also added that he was not informed of any proposal to abolish the Leadership Council of the party.
\n\u201cAnyway, whichever the decision the party makes that would be for the betterment of the party,\u201d the Spokesperson noted.<\/p>\n
