Upping the ante against two Tamil movies with a Sri Lankan connection in the offing, 65 organisations with Tamil nationalist sympathies, including parties such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Tamilar Vaazhvurimai Katchi (TVK), have come together to oppose the release of Puli Paarvai and Kaththi.<\/p>\n

Speaking to The Hindu after a meeting of the outfits here, the TVK chief and former MLA, Vel Murugan, said Pulipaarvai, being produced by Vendhar movies, showed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and its slain leader V. Prabhakaran in a bad light.<\/p>\n

According to him, the movie portrayed Balachandran \u2014 the younger son of Prabhakaran who is alleged to have been executed during the final stages of the civil war in 2009 \u2014 as a child soldier.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are posters with Balachandran in LTTE uniform. This is a complete distortion of facts. This also supports the charge of the Sri Lankan state that the LTTE used child soldiers. Secondly, there are scenes in the movie where the character of Prabhakaran allegedly tells another that the civil war was fought for his self-pride. This, too, was unacceptable,\u201d said Mr. Vel Murugan,<\/p>\n

Last week, a few students protested against the audio launch of the movie in the city.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the organisations said the producers of the Vijay-starrer Kaththi, Lyca Productions, had links to relatives of Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksa. Unless the producers changed, the film should not be released, the organisations said, threatening to launch a protest if their demands were not met.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, co-producer of Kaththi, K. Karunamoorthy of Ayngaran International, denied reports that Lyca Productions promoter Subaskaran Allirajah had business links with Mr. Rajapaksa\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody has directly called me and spoken to me. Many of these organisations have come to a hasty conclusion based on hearsay without getting it clarified from us. What can we do? We will take appropriate steps before the film\u2019s release on Deepavali. We will hold a press meet and clarify all doubts that any organisation might have about Lyca Productions. For now, I can say Mr. Allirajah has no business links with President Rajapaksa,\u201d Mr. Karunamoorthy said.<\/p>\n
