Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that is the physical aspect of it, while inner beauty shines from within. When a woman’s physical beauty fades, it is said the eyesight of a man of her age too weakens. But, women strongly feel that physical beauty can be revived. Pandering to this belief, we see thousands of beauty parlours springing up in every nook and corner of the country. So, irrespective of status or age, women in the modern world appear to be more conscious about their beauty and run the risk of curtailing their life.<\/p>\n

So it was in such backdrop, in an effort to tackle the battle of the bulge that Dr. P. A. Priyangi chose to visit a cosmetic surgery clinic last week to get rid of the fast developing belly-fat, which irritated her even behind the steering-wheel of her car.<\/p>\n

Dr. Priyangi (47) attached to the plastic surgery unit of the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital went to a cosmetic surgery clinic in Bambalapitiya to reduce her big belly by way of a plastic surgery, medically known as Liposuction.<\/p>\n

Cosmetic surgery Liposuction, which is also known as fat re-modelling, is used to shape the body by removing fat from different parts of the body. Areas affected could range from the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck and the back of the arms. The negative aspect of removing too much fat, unusual lumpiness and extensive growth in the skin can be seen in those patients. The more the fat that’s removed greater is the risk at surgery.<\/p>\n

Dr. Priyangi was a mother of two children; a son and a daughter. Her sudden and unexpected death is a blow to the two children.<\/p>\n


\nFrustrated over fatness<\/strong><\/p>\n

A source close to family of the victim said, she was waiting to get the cosmetic surgery done over a long period of time, but she did not receive sufficient support from her husband. She went ahead with her decision of doing the surgery, met the concerned doctor and had paid Rs 10,000 as an advance. The surgery was planned on Tuesday (12).<\/p>\n

“She had a big belly, or rather a fat belly and was always complaining about it. She weighed around 80 to 90 Kgs and a height of 165 cm. She decided to go through the cosmetic surgery, which cost around
\nRs 100,000,” said a source who wished to remain anonymous.<\/p>\n

The surgeon<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cosmetic surgery was conducted by a reputed cosmetic surgeon in the country, Dr. Kevin Nimal Gamage, who obtained his MBBS from Sri Lanka and had specialized in cosmetic surgery in the United States.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gamage’s bio, describes hm as an Associate of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons, a member of the World Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons with extensive post graduate training including specialties of General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Cosmetic Surgery. He is described as being board certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.<\/p>\n

In the USA, he has performed over 12,000 liposuction procedures, 3,000 facial fat grafting, 1,800 breast fat grafting and 1,800 buttock fat grafting procedures. He is working full time in Sri Lanka since 2009 and has performed many surgeries. His focus is the overall health of his patients. He is a world expert on anti-ageing and nutrition. He is listed as Kevin Nimal Gamage, MD, which he used in USA. You will find that he is the only Sri Lankan Cosmetic Surgeon currently associated with the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. Dr Gamage is a member of World Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. He was trained by Dr. Roger Amar who is the father of FAMI fat grafting technique, Dr. Angelo Cuzalina who is the current President of American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons,<\/p>\n

Dr. Guillermo Blugerman who has introduced new and innovative techniques of liposculpting and fat grafting. He is an associate of Dr. Jeffrey Klein who discovered the new technique of liposuction under tumescent technique.<\/p>\n

The first misfortune<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 19 February 2013, Dr. Rajeewa Jayasinghe, a Professor of History at the Peradeniya University, 46 years old entered the Kalubowila Teaching hospital for an operation in order to reduce his weight, which was 300 kilos. He died at the Hospital due to post-surgical complication.<\/p>\n

The operation was performed under the laparoscopy method which is called the (SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY) is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 25% of its original size.
\nThe family of Jayasinghe say that his death was due to the medical negligence by the doctors. The surgeons and doctors said Jayasinghe had other complications too where instead of the normal procedure the laparoscopy method was adopted for this operation.<\/p>\n

The Cosmetics, Devices and Drugs Regulatory Authority (CDDRA) stated that prevailing laws were insufficient to regulate cosmetic surgeries. Following the death of the female doctor on Tuesday attention has been drawn to introduce a legal framework to regulate cosmetic surgeries in the country.
\nThe Government Analyst, a Judicial Medical Officer and officials of the Ministry of Health inspected the doctor’s clinic and found expired brands of medications and injections.<\/p>\n

Deputy Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake told Ceylon Today necessary action will be taken against the cosmetic surgeon if he had used any expired cosmetics. Dissanayake said CDDRA was carrying out investigations regarding the incident.<\/p>\n

GMOA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) raised concerns over the standards of the private cosmetic clinic where the victim underwent the surgery.<\/p>\n

GMOA Media spokesman,Dr. Samantha Ananda said, he had queried from authorities whether they had checked the cosmetic surgery centre regarding required standards defined in the Private Medical Institute Registration Act. The GMOA noted that approximately 40,000 quack doctors are currently operating in the country and noted the necessity to take action against them.<\/p>\n
