Wanigasooriya said that the NGO sector was governed by rules and regulations introduced in 1980, 1998 as well as 1999.<\/p>\n<p>The military spokesman called the media briefing in the wake of the National Secretariat for NGOs directing registered NGOs not to engage in any activity outside their mandate. Asked by The Island whether any specific reason prompted the NGO Secretariat which comes under the purview of the Defence Ministry to issue fresh instructions, Brigadier Wanigasooriya said: &#8220;No special reason.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The military official reiterated that the NGO sector was governed by rules, regulations and directives issued in 1980, 1998 and 1999.<\/p>\n<p>The NGO Secretariat has prohibited NGOs from organizing media conferences, conducting workshops, providing training to journalists and issuing press statements. Asked by the media whether the government was making an attempt to silence NGOs to in view of the UN war crimes investigation, Brig. Wanigasooriya insisted that the NGO Secretariat didn\u2019t say any such thing.
