The Prize, intended to encourage English writing by Sri Lankans, is named after Michael Ondaatje’s mother, Doris Gratiaen.

The judges for the Gratiaen Prize 2013 were: Tissa Devendra (Chairperson of the judging panel), a former senior civil servant and well known public figure; Shravika Damunupola Amarasekara, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of English, University Colombo and the Director of the university’s International Unit and Vijay Nagaraj, a developmental professional with a keen in interest in South Asian literatures.

According to the panel of judges, ‘Edges’, a published collection of poetry “draws from perennial themes such as love and friendship to historically and geographically specific concerns regarding nationhood or identity. Many of the poems stand out for the way the personal and the political are interwoven as well as for their innovative and metaphor rich language. Intense emotion is recorded convincingly but without falling prey to sentimentality. The sustained manner in which thought and feeling, as well as language and imagery are given voice reveals the poet’s control over his craft.”

“The Nation” newspaper’s Editor-in-Chief Malinda Seneviratne was awarded the Gratiaen Prize 2013 for Creative Writing in English for his collection of poetry: ‘Edges’.
