Congress spokesman Shakil Ahmed has conceded defeat in the national election, saying the nation voted \u201cagainst us\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mr. Ahmed told The Associated Press on Friday that trends on Friday were \u201ccertainly not\u201d in his party\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n

Admitting its defeat, the Congress on Friday said it was \u201cvery disappointed\u201d with the poll outcome but hit out at Narendra Modi for pursuing \u201cpolitics of polarisation\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing by the election trends that have come so far, we humbly admit the defeat of Congress and UPA as people\u2019s mandate… We will introspect and then we will deliberate on our future role as a political party,\u201d senior party leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi told reporters at the AICC as election trends indicated its worst-ever performance.<\/p>\n

Party leader Meem Afzal attributed BJP\u2019s gains to the \u201chuge\u201d amount of money spent by the opposition party in its campaign and \u201cpolitics of polarisation like that was seen in Muzaffarnagar\u201d as well as \u201ccaste card\u201d played by BJP\u2019s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n

To a question on whether price rise and corruption could have done the party in, he said, \u201cyes it could be an issue\u201d.<\/p>\n

Union Minister Rajiv Shukla said that the trends are \u201cvery disppointing\u201d for the party.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe did not expect this kind of results but in democracy everything happens. This is people\u2019s verdict and we will have to abide by that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Asked whether Rahul Gandhi should take responsibility for the defeat, Mr. Shukla said, \u201cit\u2019s collective responsibility\u201c.<\/p>\n

To queries about reasons for such a performance of Congress, the Union Minister said that while the Congress-led UPA government brought out a number of schemes for people\u2019s welfare, it could not take the message to the people.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Narendra Modi sold a dream to the people in which he said that he will get them the Sun, moon and the Jupiter and people believed in all of them and voted for it,\u201d Mr. Shukla said.<\/p>\n

Conceding that its prospects appear \u201cbleak\u201d and that the Congress is read to play the role of a \u201cresponsible opposition\u201d, party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that the leads show that that there was an \u201cambiance\u201d but expressed confidence that the party will stage a come back with blazing guns after taking corrective mesures.<\/p>\n

The Congress spokesperson said that his party fought the election very well but added \u201cwe have to introspect\u201d saying the party has 10-12 corrections to do and there is a \u201cneed to look at things in terms of policies, persons and future\u201d.<\/p>\n
