Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen yesterday demanded that the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Secretary Galagodawatte Gnanasara retracts the recent defamatory allegations levelled against him and tenders an apology or face a Rs.500 million law suit.<\/p>\n

Addressing a press conference in Colombo, Bathiudeen said that that if Galagodawatte Gnanasara Thera did not apologise for the false and malicious allegations aimed at creating hatred and contempt towards him and the Muslim community, within two weeks from yesterday, he would institute legal action claiming damages in a sum of Rs.500 million.<\/p>\n

“Galagodawatte Gnanasara Thera told the media in Colombo on March 20,2014 that I was responsible for the destruction of the Wilpattu National Park; I created an exclusive Muslim Zone from Wilpattu to Mannar and attempting to create an Arab colony in the same area; I am engaged in the invasion of Sri Lanka by building houses for Muslims in the Northern Province and that I threw stones at courts and obstructed the course of justice”,the Minister noted adding that they had been made with absolute disregard for truth and accuracy and aimed at slandering his character and also creating communal disharmony.<\/p>\n

Bathiudeen, pointed out that resettling people displaced by a three decade war in their original homes and lands was a key policy objective of the UPFA government headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, of which he was a Cabinet Minister.” All housing projects for Muslims in the North were done with the support and concurrence of the Government, with no damage being caused to any part of the Wilpattu National Park. Muslims are returning to the Northern Province after more than twenty years of living in refugee camps, following their forcible expulsion by the LTTE.”<\/p>\n

P. Jayathilleke, of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) and a member of the Northern Provincial Council, said that as a Sinhala Buddhist, he rejected all the allegations that the BBS had levelled against Bathiudeen. “Having moved closely with Minister, I can vouch for the fact that the accusations made by the BBS are totally baseless.”<\/p>\n

Among the others present at the briefing were Secretary of the ACMC Y. L. S. Hameed and former Minister and ACMC member, Ameer Ali.
