{"id":28299,"date":"2014-02-23T21:30:16","date_gmt":"2014-02-24T02:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=28299"},"modified":"2014-02-23T23:56:36","modified_gmt":"2014-02-24T04:56:36","slug":"indian-cbfc-refuses-censor-certificate-for-no-fire-zonedocumentary-to-be-screened-in-india-as-it-may-strain-friendly-relations-with-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dbsjeyaraj.com\/dbsj\/?p=28299","title":{"rendered":"Indian CBFC Refuses Censor Certificate for &#8220;No Fire Zone&#8221;Documentary to be Screened in India as it &#8220;may strain friendly relations with Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by<\/p>\n<p>Anita Joshua<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has refused a censor certificate to the controversial film No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields of Sri Lanka, a documentary on the last phase of the war between Sri Lankan forces and the LTTE in early 2009.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary that has been in public domain for over three years has been contested by the Sri Lankan government as propaganda to discredit Colombo in the eyes of the international community.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In a statement from London on Saturday, the producers of the film said the documentary\u2019s director Callum Macrae has decided to make it available for \u201cfree streaming online\u201d in India. There was no official word from the CBFC and efforts by The Hindu to contact officials for a response did not yield result.<\/p>\n<p>The producers have, in turn, accused the Indian authorities of \u201cpolitical censorship of unpalatable truths\u201d for refusing a censor certificate on the ground it \u201cmay strain friendly relations with Sri Lanka.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Disturbing visuals<\/p>\n<p>According to the press release, the Board also found most of the visuals of the film \u201cwhich documents war crimes\u2026 at the end of the Sri Lankan civil war\u201d as disturbing.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the failure to obtain a censor certificate for his film, Mr. Macrae said: \u201cI find it very disturbing that a country whose independent history is rooted in the struggle for democratic rights and free speech should have taken what is, in effect, an act of overt political censorship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The decision to make the film available for \u201cfree streaming online in India\u201d has been billed as a mark of protest against \u201cthe ban\u201d. It would be available for free streaming from Sunday in English and with Hindi sub-titles.
