T<\/strong>he fourth season of Vijay TV Airtel Supersinger Competition has concluded with a fairy tale ending. The winner Diwakar is from a humble social background and without any formal training in singing. Diwakar was not only the choice of the Judges, but also of the people who endorsed him with a record number of votes.<\/p>\n

The zenith of Diwakar\u2019s performance in the keenly contested show was his rendering of the song \u201dNeeyay Unakku endrum Nigaraanaavan\u201dfrom the old Tamil film “Baley Pandia\u201d produced and directed by B.R.Panthulu in 1962.Sung by maestro TM Soundararajan(TMS) and \u201cKonnakol\u201dexpert MS.Raju(not to be confused with the Telugu film producer) the song was picturised on actors Sivaji Ganesan and M.R. Radha singing with K. Balaji playing the \u201cGhatam\u201d.<\/p>\n

What made Diwakar\u2019s performance outstanding was that he himself sang the entire song eloquently, moving back and forth from one intonation to another, with great speed.In the original film song the words and syllables are sung by TMS for Sivaji and Raju for MR Radha.But here , Diwakar performed it as a virtual solo emulating both TMS and Raju. Konnakol or vocal percussion is by itself an intricate task but it was made even more challenging by the fact that Raju had imitated the guttural rasping tone of MR Radha in the film.<\/p>\n

Incorporating two singing styles in one song is hard but alternating between two types of voice tones and voice pitches is extremely difficult with the danger of the voice cracking or shifting to a falsetto. To his credit Diwakar rose up to the occasion and provided a scintillating performance.One could discern the appreciative mood of the audience particularly among the distinguished professional singers present.Some were seen keeping count of the rhythmic notes by snapping or tapping fingers. Diwakar did not disappoint.<\/p>\n

The audience was in delightful raptures and seemed to enjoy the performance every second. It erupted into thunderous applause and gave Diwakar a spontaneous standing ovation. The guest of honour veteran songstress S. Janaki walked up to the stage and hugged and kissed the singer. She blessed him and gave a thousand rupee note as a token of her esteem. Janaki also praised Diwakar meaningfully by quoting the first line of the song to him.\u201dNeeyay Unakku Endrum Nigaraanavan\u201d( You are always equal to yourself).<\/p>\n
