Colombo District Parliamentarian, Ravi Karunanayake, yesterday resigned from the National Nomination Board of the United National Party (UNP), expressing his disappointment and aversion over the manner in which the decisions are being taken with regard to the selection of candidates for the Western Provincial Council election from the Colombo District.<\/p>\n

In a scathing letter sent last afternoon to UNP Leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Karunanayake has questioned the arbitrary manner in which Wickremesinghe and the Nomination Board had acted when selecting candidates in the Colombo District by deviating from the normal procedure of seeking the opinion of respective organizers of each electorate.<\/p>\n

Karunanayake also said that he walked out of the selection committee of the National Nomination Board on 3 February, to uphold the dignity of the Nomination Board.<\/p>\n


\nFollowing are excerpts from Karunanayake’s letter:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I am extremely sad and deeply disappointed with the manner in which the decisions are being taken at the National Nomination Board with regard to the selection of candidates for the Provincial Council elections for the Colombo District. You are well aware, owing to the hard work put in and unity of the Colombo District organizations, we were sure of winning this provincial election in the Colombo District like the way we won Colombo Municipal Council election in 2011.<\/p>\n

“You are also aware that whenselections were made for other districts the views of the electoral organizers of those districts were sought and taken into consideration, for example, in Galle, Kalutara and Gampaha. However, when it came to the Colombo District, a unilateral decision was taken by you that the National Nomination Board will take the decisions without referring to the organizers. I consider this an arbitrary decision taken against the unity of the Colombo District organizers and of the democratic principles on which the UNP has been built upon.<\/p>\n

“Almost all the electoral organizers of Colombo are totally against this practice and I wish to place on record my objection to the same. You and the national nomination board (where you and I are the only Colombo district MPs) have disregarded the local level activists who are qualified and capable of showing good results and introduced people into the list from nowhere. While some of the nominees have not worked for the party even for a day, there are some who have even been working to detriment of the party. This has disheartened the electoral organizers. It is therefore, the duty of those who made these unilateral decisions to take full responsibility of the performance of the party in this Provincial Council Elections.<\/p>\n

“You sir, are aware I requested you and the nomination board to call the entire Colombo district organization as the practice in the other district to get their views, this was summarily rejected. I disagreed with this practice and to uphold the dignity of the nomination board walked out of the meeting of 3 February, 2014 at 9:23 p.m.<\/p>\n

“In these circumstances, I have decided to show solidarity with all Colombo district organizers which I lead and disassociate myself from the decisions taken and forthwith resign from the selection committee of the national nomination board.”
