And while there’s a lot that I don’t like about President Barack Obama, it’s his indecision that tops the list. (Unbridled arrogance and professorial aloofness are tied for second).

After seeing the way events have unfolded over the past few days, I’m now convinced that Obama will go down as one of the most indecisive and incompetent US presidents in history when it comes to foreign policy.

Obama probably doesn’t have the votes in Congress, but now the US is holding off and putting its faith in the Russians – of all people.

This isn’t diplomacy on the cheap; it’s amateur hour in the Oval Office. The notion that the Obama administration would try to claim any credit for recent “positive” developments – or for the fact that military intervention may have been forestalled – is absolutely preposterous.

The people running Syria policy in Washington have been AWOL for two-and-a-half years. More recently, foreign policy sclerosis has taken hold, because the Obama administration still has no idea why intervention in Syria might be necessary.

The administration is just hoping the problem will go away. Unfortunately, that sclerosis has now been coupled with schizophrenia as the administration has recently cited myriad reasons for why intervention is necessary while still failing to deliver a consistent message.

Given Moscow’s most recent maneuvering, it looks likes like a US led intervention in Syria will continue to be debated for some time. However, Obama’s systematic assault on the executive office and his insistence on undermining American power will not.

(Taylor Dibbert is an international consultant based in Washington, DC.
