It is reported that the statue of Goddess Sri Badhrakali has been destroyed by dashing it on a flat stone used for washing clothes, consequent to it being removed from the kovil at the Dambulla sacred area.<\/p>\n

It was also revealed the statue was destroyed in the vicinity of the ‘lime well’ located near the kovil.<\/p>\n

When devotees visited the kovil to venerate the Goddess yesterday (3), they had found that the statue was missing. After conducting a search in the premises, they had found it in pieces near the ‘lime well.’<\/p>\n

“The statue was damaged. One can see the statue had been dashed on a rock,” a devotee said. Eye witnesses said some devotees had wailed and cursed the people who had done something as mean as dashing the statue on a stone, and facing the direction of the Dambulla rock, had appealed to God Sri Vishnu to punish those responsible.<\/p>\n

An arrangement had been made by the Buddhist monks of the Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya in Dambulla, to remove the statue from sacred area and place it in a temporary hut at the Yuanwatte Viharaya on 15 September, in view of the development work being carried out in the area.<\/p>\n

A devotee, K. Letchumi, said it is an outright insult to Goddess Badhrakali, and Hindu devotees are deeply hurt by the act of destruction on the venerated statue.<\/p>\n

When Ven. Inamaluwe Sri Sumangala Maha Nayake of the Rangiri Dambulu Viharaya was contacted in this regard, he said it was an act of gross sabotage.<\/p>\n

“I am surprised that such an act of vengeance had been committed. The Gods will punish whoever is responsible for destroying the statue of Goddess Badhrakali,” Ven. Sri Sumangala said.<\/p>\n
