I<\/strong>t was early hours of Sunday 17 March. I was returning from Macau to Hong Kong after a short visit with my nephew who was browsing his iPhone. I was in deep thought of the situation in Sri Lanka. All of a sudden he gave me his phone and said look.<\/p>\n

There was a news item in Tamil asking the Muslims of Kandy not to go out on the Sunday 17th as the Bodhu Bala Sena was conducting an anti Muslim rally. I asked whether it was on Facebook and he said yes.

\nThat news saddened me. Couple of hours ago only I had read from the web site of an English daily that had a caption “Some elements trying to disturb racial, religious harmony: IGP”. <\/p>\n

It further said ; “Police Chief N.K. Illangakoon today warned that some elements appeared to be making a subtle attempt to disturb racial and religious amity and co-existence that prevail in the country.<\/p>\n

He said in a statement that the police department was committed to ensure the safety and security of everyone belonging to all races and religions and vowed to treat everyone equally.<\/p>\n

The IGP also said Sri Lanka was a multi- racial, multi-religious country and everyone in the country had the right to follow any preferred religion and to free expression, under the Constitution.<\/p>\n

He said however, there were attempts by certain elements to portray such free expressions and statements as conflicts between religions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever opinions one may have they must be expressed respecting the law of the land, and finding solutions through negotiations among all parties concerned is the procedure followed in a democratic country,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The IGP said it was the duty of the police to ensure the safety and security of each and every person belonging to all races and religions and to implement the law of the country in a manner fair and just by all.”<\/p>\n

Though IGP’s words were assuring peace, the way the government was behaving made one to believe the authorities could be accused of aiding and abetting this anti Muslim campaign. I wonder why?<\/p>\n

Many questions come in my mind and many things come in my mind to write in this regard. But I like to finish this with only one question and heavy heart ; Honourable President, are the Muslims of Sri Lanka, the Jews of Germany?<\/em><\/p>\n
