How do you view this?

A: It is ludicrous that people who have fuelled terrorism in India and continuously caused hatred are allowed to continue in this manner. India is a democracy and it is correct that we welcome your President. He is on a private visit – in fact he is a pilgrim – and there is no harm if he visits the sacred temples.

I think we should ignore this lunatic fringe to the maximum– and when we cannot, the law enforcement authorities should step in. They have.

Q: A lot of people in Tamil Nadu, not just its politicians, appear angered by the President’s visit due to the alleged treatment of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Do you agree the Tamils have been victims of targeted violence here, specially during the war?

A: They were victimized by a war that sprang from within their community. Some embraced violence, not all. Sadly, there is always collateral damage to any war. It is regrettable. This is what we experienced.

I am sure, your government did not intend annihilating the Tamil community. But it is the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) that devoured so many lives, both of the Sinhalese and the Tamils. You have a President who ended terrorism in your country and set it free. He has saved your country from terror and by defeating the LTTE, has done India a great favour. We also have our own security threats, specially from the LTTE. We cannot afford to forget that Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by the LTTE in Sri Perumbudur in Tamil Nadu. Why should we support terrorist outfits?

Q: I was asking about the Tamil Nadu sentiments?

A: In Tamil Nadu and elsewhere, politicians are politicians. They will make the correct noises to dominate the media space. What have they done to improve the lot of the Tamil people, if they so care? If they really cared, they should have lobbied for a solution devoid of violence, long ago.

I find some of these reactionary politicians from Tamil Nadu simply rhetorical. They have done nothing for the socio-political advancement of the Tamils but repeatedly whipped up emotions to secure power. They are ready to protest but not for long term action.

Instead, they have only fuelled hatred and the end result was the violent end we witnessed in 2009. Certian Tamil Nadu politicians should rightfully accept responsibility for aiding terrorism, both by word and deed.

Q: Many leading Tamil Nadu politicians have been campaigning that Sri Lanka should be tried for war crimes by an international tribunal. India voted in favour of the US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC. Is India likely to vote in favour of another motion against Sri Lanka?

A: It is amazing how political lunacy spreads from one end to the other. One of the biggest political mistakes by India was to vote against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC. We must remember, India and Sri Lanka are geographically and culturally closed.

We should not allow sinister rulers to destroy ancient relationships. Besides, the defeat of the LTTE also addresses India’s security concerns.

Q: Nearly 1,400 people have been arrested and taken into preventive custody to ensure President Rajapaksa’s safety. This means, there is strong dislike on Indian soil towards the Sri Lankan President?

A: This is projected hatred. But I feel people can protest as long as they do not incite violence. The problem with some of these Dravidian groups is that they do incite violence. Indian Police is right to keep them all under check. These are sinister forces still catering to imperialist needs.

They are stooges of the LTTE, but the LTTE is a thing of the past. These harmful protesters should be arrested under the National Security Act and be investigated to ascertain whether they are financed by the ISI in Pakistan.

President Rajapaksa should feel welcome to visit India anytime. Sri Lankans and Indians have the same genes, we are the same people. India should take all possible action to protect the Sri Lankan assets in the State of Tamil Nadu. It is our responsibility.
COURTESY:CEYLON TODAY

Dr.Subramanian Swamy Interviewed by Dilrukshi Handunnetti Sri Lanka should do its best to eschew terrorism and the international community should help the island nation to crush terror and those who fan the flames of separatism such as Vaiko should be arrested and investigated, Indian Janatha Party Leader, Dr. Subramanian Swamy said.
