The letter sent by Matara District United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian, Mangala Samaraweera, to the Commonwealth Secretariat, requesting its intervention to investigate the impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice, Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, had not had the approval of the party top command. According to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, this fact had been personally disclosed to him by UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, who had lamented that he had not known about Samaraweera’s letter to the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n

The President revealed this at an event to felicitate Ven. Sri Gombaddala Nandarama Maha Nayaka Thera of the Sri Rohana Chapter in Matara yesterday. Since Samaraweera had acted on his own in sending the letter to the Commonwealth Secretariat, the President said he instructed the Leader of the Opposition to issue a statement to the effect that Samaraweera had sent the letter on his own accord without the consent of the Party.<\/p>\n

Samaraweera had sent the letter on Sunday, requesting the Commonwealth Secretariat to investigate the impeachment of the Chief Justice in what he called a breach of the bloc’s democratic values.<\/p>\n

He urged the group’s Secretary General Kamelesh Sharma to order his disciplinary body, the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, to probe Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

Samaraweera released a copy of his letter to Sharma a day after the Chief Justice was found guilty of three charges of professional misconduct.<\/p>\n

“It was becoming increasingly clear that the Rajapaksa regime was moving away from Commonwealth values and principles,” Samaraweera said in the letter.<\/p>\n
