The main Parliamentary Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), handed over two no-confidence motions (NCMs), one against the incumbent Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)-led Government and the other against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, to Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana yesterday (3).
A group of SJB MPs led by SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa presented the two NCMs to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena at the Speaker’s official residence last afternoon.
Speaking to the media afterward, Premadasa said the two NCMs will be taken up for voting at the earliest possible when the Parliament convenes again.
The SJB on Monday (2) said that it would reveal the names of who did and did not sign the NCM.
“We are ready to expose in Parliament the lies that some MPs are telling the people by claiming that they are acting independently,” SJB MP Hesha Withanage said. “In the coming days, details of who has signed the NCM will be revealed to the public daily.”
He was speaking to the media after a meeting of the SJB Parliamentary group, which was held at the Opposition Leader’s office in Colombo to discuss the NCM against the Government and the impeachment resolution that is to be brought against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Speaking in Parliament on 8 April, Premadasa told Parliament that plans are afoot to submit a NCM against the current Government over the prevailing economic crisis. He also said that the SJB was contemplating an impeachment motion against the President, if the latter is not willing to quit.
