PM Mahinda Rajapaksa Telephones Lohan Ratwatte From Italy and Tells him to Step Down Pending Inquiry; Mahinda Talks to Gotabaya Also;Lohan Takes Responsibility and Submits Resignation Letter which is Accepted by President.

State Minister of Prison Management, Lohan Ratwatta has resigned from his portfolio a short while ago. He has sent his resignation letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The President’s Media Division in a statement said Ratwatta had tendered his resignation acknowledging his responsibility for the incidents that took place at the Welikada and Anuradhapura Prison premises.

Ratwatte informed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa regarding his decision today and the President accepted his resignation, the PMD said.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had earlier today informed State Minister of Prison Management, Lohan Ratwatta, to step down from his portfolio immediately, pending further investigations into allegations that he threatened prisoners at the Anuradhapura Prison on Sunday.

Rajapaksa who is presently in Italy, had telephoned Ratwatta and told him to step down and had then telephoned President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as well, the Daily Mirror learns.

The Prime Minister has called for a full scale investigation into the allegations against Ratwatta and has asked him to step down immediately.
