Tamil National Alliance express our deep sorrow at the untimely passing away of Mr. Magala Samaraweera, former minister and truthful friend of the Tamil People.

Mr. Samaraweera entered politics in 1989, and became a minister in 1994 in the government of President Chandrika Bandaranayeka Kumarasthunga and lead the “Sudu Nelum” movement campaigning for a political solution to the Tamil National Question.

He continued with his Anti – communalist stand right until his death.

Mr. Samaraweera lost his cabinet portfolio because he protested at the way the war with the LTTE was being prosecuted.

Later when he regained his position as foreign minister in 2015, he tirelessly worked towards Justice, accountability and reconciliation. His vision for Sri Lanka was one where every citizen was equal irrespective of ethnic, language, race, religion, orientation or belief. Mangala Samaraweera’s death is a great loss to all of us.
