Chief of Defence Staff Ravindra Wijegunaratne Could not Have Left For Mexico Without the Knowledge of President Sirisena Who Is the Minister of Defence Charges NMSJ Co-convenor Sarath Wijesuriya.

President Maithripala Sirisena should take the responsibility for Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne leaving the country to participate in 208th Independence Commemoration Ceremony of United Mexican States, Sarath Wijesuriya, co-convener of the National Movement for Social Justice told the media yesterday.

Wijegunaratne left the country requesting a fresh date from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to provide a statement in respect of an investigation into him having allegedly helped Lt. Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi wanted in connection with the 11 wartime disappearances to flee the country.

“Wijegunaratne can’t leave the country without the knowledge of the President, who is the Minister of Defence. It is becoming increasingly clear that the man who replaced Mahinda Rajapaksa has become a replica of the former President,” he said.

Wijesuriya added that the President must focus on abolishing the executive presidency. “Instead, he is talking about the importance of appointing the next Prime Minister. The President gives long speeches about his vision, but it’s clear that he has no idea about the rule of law. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinge is no better. Maithripala Sirisena now calls us, the people who brought him into power, NGO agents. This is a lesson that we should never forget.”
