These Are But Five Of My Favourite Christmas Carols

by D.B.S. Jeyaraj

Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year Friends!

It’s Christmas season again!

An integral part of Christmas is the singing of Christmas carols in churches as well as at events celebrating Christmas.

There was a time when carolling was an important part of Christmas. ‘’Carol parties” including someone dressed as Santa claus would visit the homes of church members during night and sing carols.Refreshments would be served at each and every home. A few firecrackers too would be lit.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, the UNP Leadership and the TINA Factor

It is said that Ranil is a liability to the UNP and that the party can revive and renew itself only after he quits or is jettisoned. Sadly a substantial number subscribing to this view are within the UNP itself.

Chandrasiri the Governor appointed for the Province by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. This titanic clash between the former Supreme court Judge and the retired Army Major-General has virtually paralysed the Northern Provincial council besides raising Constitutional issues of a controversial nature.

LTTE “Great Heroes Day” Is for Tigers Alone and Not For All Tamils

“Maaveerar Naal”or “Great Heroes Day” was observed annually on November 27th in a grand manner by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for many years in the past.

The yearly event lost its lustre after the military debacle suffered by the tigers in May 2009.Despite the LTTE ceasing to exist as a viable entity in Sri Lanka after the military defeat, tiger and pro-tiger elements in the global Tamil Diaspora and Tamil Nadu strove to retain the mystique of “Maaveerar Naal”by organizing various activities related to the Great Heroes Day abroad.

(This short article written as a tribute was published in “The Sunday Leader” of Colombo after the death of ♥ Gemini Ganesan ♥. It is being reproduced here without any changes due to requests by many readers who are fans of the Romance king of Tamil cinema who was born on November 17th 1920)

Gemini Ganesan one time heart throb of Tamil cinema passed away peacefully in his sleep at 1.30 am on March 22nd at his residence in Nungambakkam, Chennai. In a career spanning five decades the octogenarian made his mark in Tamil films as the romantic hero par excellence and was known as “kaadhal Mannan” (King of Romance).

His on screen and off screen persona were intertwined and the evergreen Gemini with four wives had several liaisons with attractive women. As Tamil Nadu chief Minister Jayalalitha Jayaram remarked his death is truly “an end of an era in Tamil cinema”.

I am reproducing a slightly edited version of that article on my blog now to commemorate his 5th death anniversary. I am also including at the end two of the many mails sent to me after the article appeared. One is from his son Sukumar Nambiar. The other is from veteran Sinhala actor Henry Jayasena. Sadly both are no more ~ - DBS Jeyaraj)

Sivaji Ganesan: Greatest Thespian of Post-Independence Tamil Cinema

By

D.B.S.Jeyaraj

October 1st was the 85th birthday of Sivaji Ganesan one of the brightest stars among the Tamil Film firmament. V.C. Ganesan known as Sivaji Ganesan was widely regarded as the greatest Thespian of Post –Independence Tamil Cinema. This doyen among Tamil actors was one of my favourites. An updated version of an article written by me earlier is being posted now to commemorate his birthday.

TAMIL cinema in Sri Lanka, it may be argued, is yet to grow beyond its nascent stage. While thousands of Tamil films have been made in India and hundreds of Sinhala movies have been produced in Sri Lanka, the number of Sri Lankan Tamil films produced so far has not touched the three-digit mark.

Mass Expulsion of Muslims From North by the LTTE: 23rd Anniversary

By

D.B.S.Jeyaraj

The month of October this year records the 23rd anniversary of a cruel, inhuman episode in the history of Tamil –Muslim relations in Sri Lanka. It was in October 1990 that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE)organization forcibly expelled the Tamil speaking Muslim people from the Northern Province in an atrocious act amounting to ethnic cleansing.

Today October 10th is the thirteenth death anniversary of the world’s first woman prime minister Mrs.Sirima Bandaranaike.

I am therefore reproducing on my blog an article written about her by me thirteen years ago. It was published in the Indian news-magazine “Frontline” of Aug 19th – Sep 01st 2000 (Vol 17-Issue 17) under the heading “Exit of an Elder Stateswoman”.

I wrote the article after Mrs. Bandaranaike resigned as Prime minister on August 10th 2000. Ill – health had been the primary cause for this decision.

I realised then that the days of the grand old lady were numbered. I thought I must write something about her that should be read by her or have it read to her while she was among us rather than pay tribute to her after her death. I also wanted it to have international exposure.

Wrangling in TNA over Provincial Ministry Posts in North

By D.B.S. JEYARAJ

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which demonstrated that it is the premier political configuration of the Sri Lankan Tamils by winning 30 out of 38 seats in the Northern provincial council is undergoing a new experience currently. After years of functioning outside the realms of power as an opposition political group the TNA is for the first time on the verge of tasting power in the Northern provincial council. This urge to taste power in the form of provincial ministries is causing much internal wrangling within the TNA as the aspirants outnumber the posts available.

Traditional Politics

So intense has been the campaigning for ministerial posts that TNA parliamentary group leader Rajavarothayam Sampanthan called for individual applications from prospective candidates for the ministry posts. Despite perusal of these applications the TNA has been unable to finalise decisions so far.

“Kaatriniley Varum Geetham” Sung By MS Subbulakshmi In “Meera”

By D.B.S.Jeyaraj

This is the first of a series of short articles about some of the sublime songs shown on the silver screen from a bygone era that have enchanted me and continue to keep me enslaved. The objective of this series is to share my impressions of these songs and also provide some information if possible about the making of these memorable melodies from Tamil movies.

I realise that the songs being in Tamil may be a deterrent in reaching out to those who do not know my mother tongue but I am optimistic that many non –Tamils and those from the Tamil Diaspora who are not very knowledgeable in Tamil would also be able to appreciate them.

Gamini Fonseka The Uncrowned Monarch of Sinhala Cinema

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

The electoral triumph of the Tamil National alliance(TNA) at the Northern provincial elections is being viewed by many as a significant breakthrough in the long struggle waged by Sri Lankan Tamils to achieve equality and justice in the Island. Despite the widely prevalent optimism this writer however is quite pessimistic at this point of time about this expectation. The hawkish manner in which the TNA conducted its campaign as well as the hostility it has evoked amidst hardliners in the South does not augur well for the positive future of the Northern provincial council. Enhancing this disillusionment further is the spectacle of an eminent ex-Supreme court judge transforming into a third-grade politician engaging in cheap politics on the one hand and responsible ministers talking of potential “nandhikkadals” in Wellawatte and Mattakkuliya on the other.

20130927-124115.jpg

Sarungale

While reflecting on this sorry state of affairs in a despondent mood the descriptions ”third grade politics” and “dirty politics” keep recurring in my thoughts. Though these words have been uttered or written by many in the past my thoughts turned to an actor who has often stated so in personal conversations, public speeches and above all as part of dialogue delivered by a character he played on screen. I am of course referring to the matinee idol Gamini Fonseka!

Tamil National Alliance Sweeps Northern Provincial Poll with 30 out of 38 Seats with CV Wigneswaran Polling 132,255 Preference Votes

By

D.B.S.Jeyaraj

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has triumphed magnificiently at the historic first election to the Northern Province of Sri Lanka with its chief ministerial candidate retired Supreme court Judge CV Wigneswaran topping the number of preference votes with a whopping tally of over 130,000.

Wigneswaran polled 132,255 votes in the Jaffna District, with the wife of Ezhilan former LTTE Political Wing Leader for Trincomalee Ananthi Sasitharan coming in second with 87,870 votes. PLOTE Leader Dharmalingam Siddharthan contesting on the TNA list polled the third highest votes in the Jaffna District.

The TNA led the polls by a landslide in the Northern Province, winning 78.48% of the total votes cast, according to the Department of Elections.

Thus the TNA has demonstrated once again that it is the premier political configuration of the Sri Lankan Tamils by winning a four-fifths majority .

Gnanasakthi Sritharan: From EPRLF Comrade to UPFA Candidate

By

D.B.S. JEYARAJ

Northern Voters will be casting their votes on September 21st 2013 at the historic first election to the Northern Provincial Council. Although population figures indicate that women are more in number than men in the North, the lists of candidates fielded by the major political parties do not reflect this gender balance. However among the few women contesting polls two candidates from rival configurations in the Jaffna district have aroused much interest and received related publicity.

Why and How Ex- SC Judge CV Wigneswaran Praised LTTE Leader Prabhakaran as a Great Hero

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

The nomination of Retired Supreme Court Judge Canagasabapathy Viswalingam Wigneswaran as Chief Ministerial candidate for the Northern Provincial Council Polls by the Tamil National Alliance(TNA) was widely hailed when announced in July. This writer while outlining the process by which the “unanimous” selection was made had this to say in his weekly column published by “Daily Mirror” on July 27th 2013. “A veritable Pandora’s box of the “Eelam” variety seems to have been opened and one does feel that the Sitar strumming Wigneswaran may not be able to play the melody of his choice in the days to come. He may even find the strings on his instrument snapping if the current trend continues. All these developments and more will be scrutinised in greater detail in a forthcoming article”.

Delivered and To Be Delivered?

Against that backdrop the time does seem opportune to focus on the political progress made by CV Wigneswaran in his new avatar as a politician. If the success of a politician prior to polls is judged by the media glare he receives then the former Judge has certainly arrived. The past few weeks have seen the media spotlight being turned on him extensively and excessively. Like fish needing water to survive, Politicians need publicity whether positive or negative. If denied publicity their fate would be akin to fish deprived of water.

Saumiamoorthy Thondaman The Patriarch of Plantation Tamils

By D.B.S. JEYARAJ

The birth centenary of Saumiamoorthy (spelled sometimes as Saumyamoorthy or Saumiyamoorthy) Thondaman was on August 30th. Thondaman was the undisputed “Thalaiver” (leader) of Sri Lanka’s predominantly Indian Tamil plantation proletariat for several decades. The founder leader of Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC),Sri Lanka’s largest Trade Union in the estate sector, was born in Munapudoor in what was then the Madras Presidency of India during British rule on August 30th 1913.The paternal grandfather of Sri Lanka’s Livestock and Rural Community Development Arumugan Thondaman, died of a myocardial infarction at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital in Colombo on October 30th 1999.

Thonda as he was widely known passed away at the age of 86. Thondaman had gone to Nuwara Eliya, in the central highlands, to preside over a meeting of the India Vamsavali Makkal Perani (Front of People of Indian Descent), an umbrella organisation of which his Ceylon Worker’s Congress (CWC) was the pivotal force. Having thrown in his party’s lot with President Kumaratunga at that time Thondaman was working to win over the support of the other 19 constituents of the Perani to his way of thinking. Taken ill on the morning of October 30, he was rushed to a hospital in Nuwara Eliya and from there flown to Colombo where he died.

The current visit to Sri Lanka by UN Human Rights Commissioner Ms. Navanetham Pillay known as Navi Pillay has aroused much interest and anticipation in the country. There is hectic activity by many Human rights activists and Non–Governmental Organization personnel to meet Ms. Pillay directly and air their grievances. It appears that meeting Navi Pillay in person is almost a status symbol for a certain category of persons. There are also attempts to derive political mileage out of such encounters.

Muslim congress may split due to cold war between party leader Hakeem and Chairman Segu Dawood

Anatomy of an Anti-Tamil Pogrom: Thirtieth Anniversary of “Black July” 1983

by D.B.S. Jeyaraj

Shops, Banks, Offices and Restaurants in the Capital’s crowded City Centre and Main Streets being burnt while the Police look on. Thousands of houses ransacked and burnt, sometimes with women and children inside. Goon squads battering passengers to death in trains and on station platforms and, without hindrance, publicly burning men and women to death on the streets! Remand prisoners and political detainees in the country’s top prison being massacred. The armed forces joining in and sometimes organizing this pogrom against members of Sri Lanka’s two Sri Lankan minority communities. The nation’s President and top ranking cabinet members publicly justifying the pogrom!” – (Introductory Paragraph from “Sri Lanka” The holocaust and After” by C.R. Hensman writing under the pseudonym L. Piyadasa)

The tragic history of post – independence Sri Lanka records that the Tamils of Sri Lanka have been subjected to mass –scale mob violence in the years 1956, 1958, 1977, 1981 and 1983. The anti-Tamil violence of July 1983 was the most terrible and horrible of them all. It remains etched in memory even after 30 years.

Northern Chief Minister Stakes and the Tamil National Alliance

by D.B.S. Jeyaraj

Somasuntharam Senathirajah alias “Mavai”Senathirajah of the Tamil National Alliance(TNA) has set his sights on the Northern Province Chief Minister post.

The six foot septuagenarian currently representing Jaffna district in Parliament has staked his claim to be the newly constituted Northern Provincial council’s first elected chief minister in an intriguing political move that is seemingly defiant of the intentions of TNA Parliamentary group leader Rajavarothayam Sampanthan on this issue.Senathirajah along with his supporters has also launched a multi-pronged campaign with the aim of boosting his claim to be Chief minister.

Sampanthan the veteran Tamil leader representing Trincomalee district in Parliament wants to nominate retired chief Justice C.V. Wigneswaran as the chief ministerial candidate of the TNA.There is strong support for Wigneswaran’s candidacy among influential sections of the TNA both in Sri Lanka and abroad.

Likewise there is opposition too.Wigneswaran himself had been wavering and vacillating about agreeing to be the TNA’s chief ministerial candidate. Finally when Wigneswaran like the Dickensian Barkis was “willing” Senathirajah has thrown his hat into the ring upsetting Sampanthan’s calculations.

Renowned Actor and Filmmaker Kamal Haasan’s Magnum Opus”Vishwaroopam”is now running to packed movie theatres in the South Indian state of “Tamil Nadu” and elsewhere. The film produced in Tamil and Hindi and dubbed in the Telugu language has raked in more than Rupees 1200 Million within a week in India

Pooja Kumar & Kamal Hassan in ‘Vishwaroopam’ premiere, Los Angeles, USA

The brouhaha surrounding the film’s ban in Tamil Nadu is over and it appears that the controversial crisis was a blessing in disguise helping to break Box office records.

Ostensibly the ban on “Vishwaroopam” was caused by the protests of Muslim groups in Tamil Nadu who claimed the film depicted Muslims in a negative light.Although the film had been cleared for release by the Indian Censor board the Tamil Nadu government of Chief minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram imposed a two week ban on the movie a day before its scheduled release on January 25th 2013 citing potential breach of peace and threats to law and order in the state.

Rizana Nafeek: Sorrowful Story of The Maid From Moothoor

By D.B.S. Jeyaraj

When news of the loss of a loved one is heard ,it is the practice of many Muslims to console each other by repeating part of a verse from the Holy Quran “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” meaning “Surely we belong to God and to Him shall we return”. The phrase is commonly translated as “Verily we belong to God, and to God we return.”

Abu Musa Abd –Allah ibn Qays al-Ashari better known as Abu Musa al-Ashari , a companion of Prophet Muhammad and a prominent personality figuring in early Islamic history has stated that the Prophet had explained the significance of this line in the following manner – “When a son of a servant of Allah dies, Allah Says to the angels, ‘Have you taken the son of My servant?’ They say, ‘Yes.’ Then Allah Says, ‘Have you taken the fruit of his heart?’ They say, ‘Yes.’ Allah Says, “What has My servant said?’ They say, ‘He has praised You and said, To Allah we belong and to Him is our return’. Then Allah Says, ‘Build a house for My servant in Paradise and call it the house of praise.’
