There is so much talk of this Diaspora in Sri Lanka. Diaspora did this. Diaspora did that, and so on. However, I am yet to see any article which describes what the Diaspora is. In Sri Lanka the word Diaspora is used to refer to the Tamil Diaspora which is pro LTTE terrorists or LTTE terror supporters.
Other democratic and independent people of Tamil origin, Sinhalese, Muslims, Malays and Burghers are not referred to as the Diaspora by Sri Lanka or writers
The word ‘Diaspora’ originated in Greece. But, refers to the DISPERSION of the Jews over historical times, sometimes voluntarily, sometimes not. I must say that the word is used, or may be misused now to refer to certain ethnic communities who have spread away from their land of origin.
However, the Chinese, who are all over the world, never seem to use the word ‘Diaspora’ to their many communities in the Americas, in Europe, in Australasia, and Asia. Neither do the Japanese who are found in many South American countries. The Indians in America use it but in a benevolent sense. American public who, owing to their exposure to Jewish suffering during World War 2, know the word well. However, the Jewish community does not use the word ‘Diaspora’ any longer. They are either Americans. Jewish Americans or just Israelis.
In a recent newspaper article or during an interview, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa commented that these people who had left Sri Lanka are citizens of those countries. That is correct as they hold valid passports from these countries, and have the right to vote, and in a sense they have no right to interfere in the affairs of another sovereign state. However, it may be different if one is a dual citizen.
The Eelam separatist Tamils or the LTTE terrorist members or what the Western media refers to as Tamil Tigers are the ones who have adopted the word Diaspora with vengeance purely for nakedly political reasons. They freely use the word “Diaspora” and abuse it. Sadly, the Sri Lankan media, officials and politicians by using it freely and willingly have given credibility to the word and have got caught in the trap of the LTTE terrorist groups abroad.
Let us not forget that these ‘Diaspora’ groups which blatantly espouse the cause of terrorism and separation also use the word “genocide” which has deeply emotive connotations in the West in general, and in the United States of America in particular. Americas acts of genocide in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and even Pakistan now is a different matter.
When either of these words is used, people recoil with horror, and the other side is ‘tarred’ whether or not they are guilty. The propagandists in LTTE terrorist fronts, the Canadian Tamil Congress and the British Tamil Forum know this only too well. The other Hebrew word they use is ‘pogrom’ in reference to the July violence of 1983 in Sri Lanka. Uses of all these words are meant to imply coercion against the minority by the majority, and the use of violence against ‘innocent Tamils’.
This was a blessing in disguise for the LTTE terrorists though the reality in Sri Lanka was something else. Many Western liberals in their ‘liberal sense’ have been seduced by this often repeated and little-refuted message.
What’s not said, of course, is that nearly all of the Tamils who emigrated did so for economic reasons using the opportunity created deliberately by the Tamil Tiger operations in the West. In fact the late terrorist leader Velupilliai Prabahakaran created the ‘LTTE Diaspora’ to get support for his brutal terror campaign in Sri Lanka. The Zionists used those words to garner sympathy and support. The LTTE terrorists, well paid Western Public Relations consultants wanted the same effect to transcend the truth of the matter in Sri Lanka.
One must also take a closer look at the statement issued by India extending the ban on the LTTE terrorist group. Indian Home Ministry statement also refers to the ‘Diaspora’ and what the separatist terror group is up to internationally. It says
“The Diaspora continue to spread through articles in the Internet portals, anti-India feeling amongst the Sri Lankan Tamils by holding the top Indian political leaders and bureaucrats responsible for the defeat of the LTTE. The LTTE, even after its military defeat in May 2009 in Sri Lanka, has not abandoned the concept of ‘Eelam’ and has been clandestinely working towards the ‘Eelam’ cause by undertaking fund raising and propaganda activities in Europe. The remnant LTTE leaders or cadres have also initiated efforts to regroup the scattered activities and resurrect the outfit locally and internationally”
I am of the view that Sri Lanka, Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should carry out an extensive campaign to expose this fraudulent ‘LTTE terrorist Diaspora’ and also remind the Western nations where these groups are campaigning tirelessly to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka.
These groups are first citizens of those countries and cannot be identified as a ‘Diaspora’, secondly they armed a terrorist group in Sri Lanka which killed thousands of innocent people, thirdly they continue to raise funds from citizens of Tamil origin living in these countries through extortion, and finally they are attempting to destabilize a sovereign country which is a member of the United Nations and the Commonwealth.
Only then will a violent, terror supportive group which describe themselves as a ‘Diaspora’ group will be exposed. Courtesy: Daily Mirror
