Attorney-General Dappula de Livera Writes to Presidential Commission of Inquiry That it has no Statutory or Legal Authority to Order the A-G to Refrain From Prosecuting Karannagoda or Dassanayake in the 11 Youths Abduction by Navy Case

Attorney General Dappula de Livera has informed the Presidential Commission of Inquiry, investigating the allegations of political victimization, that the commission has no statutory or legal authority to order the Attorney General to refrain from performing his statutory functions.

The Attorney General has informed the commission of this in writing last Friday, as regards the media reports with regard to the Commission of Inquiry had ordered the AG to refrain from prosecuting the abduction case of 11 youth.

The Presidential Commission asked the Attorney General to halt the proceedings of the case filed against former Commander of the Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda and former Navy Spokesperson Rear Admiral D. K. P. Dassanayake, until the commission concludes their hearings.

Karannagoda and Dassanayake are among 14 suspects charged with the abduction and disappearance of eleven youth in Colombo and its suburbs in 2008.
