Sri Lanka Podujana Party has claimed victory in 2019 presidential polls with its candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa getting large majorities in the South.
By late morning Sunday Rajapaksa had polled 48 percent of the vote and Sajith Premadasa 45 percent.
“We expect to win comfortably on the first count,” ex-Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal, who is part of Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s economic team said.
Sajith Premadasa polled large majorities in the North of the country.
Rajapaksa ran a campaign based on national security.
