Jude Shramantha Anthony Jayamaha convicted for the brutal killing of the 19 year old Yvonne Jonsson at Royal Park in 2005 has been granted presidential pardon and most likely will be released today, highly placed sources confirmed to Sunday Observer.
Accordingly the documents relating to the release has been forwarded through the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice to the Prisons Commissioner.
Sources confirmed that documents were sent to the Kuruvita Prison officials after the Prisons Commissioner signed them.
“Although Kuruvita prison has been informed of these developments they need documentation to act on it. Documents have already been sent and if all formalities can be attended to today he will be released, failing which he will be released on Monday (11),” sources confirmed to Sunday Observer.
Shramantha has also been punished for keeping a mobile phone in his possession by prisons officials. The Presidential pardon issued had indicated that he had been pardoned from this said offence as well.
President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to spare Shramantha during his last week in office is the second during his presidency. Earlier this year he pardoned Bodu Bala Sena Secretary Venerable. Galagodaththe Gnanasara thera who had been convicted of contempt of court.
