Wartime Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday told The Island that he had relinquished his US citizenship in April this year.
Rajapaksa said that the process had been completed without any issue.
Responding to another query, Rajapaksa said that there had never been an issue with regard to renunciation of his US citizenship.
Asked whether he had obtained a new passport, Rajapaksa said that after the US revoked his passport, he has had a Sri Lankan passport.
He obtained US citizenship in early 90s after having served the Sri Lanka Army as a frontline combat officer and rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
In terms of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution enacted in 2015, dual citizens cannot contest either presidential or parliamentary elections.
Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) is widely expected to declare, on August 11, Gotabaya Rajapaksa as its candidate for the next presidential election.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that he was ready to take up any challenge.
