The STF and Police personnel accused of killing five students in Trincomalee were acquitted yesterday after a lengthy trial.
Thirteen suspects including 12 STF personnel and a policeman held in connection with the killing of five persons including two undergraduates and injuring two others by shooting near the Gandhi roundabout in Trincomalee in 2006 were acquitted of all charges and released by the Trincomalee Chief Magistrate M.M.Mohamed yesterday.
They were charged by the CID under Section 296 of the Penal Code for committing the murder of Manoharan Rajiharan, Yogarajah Hemachandra, Lohitha Raja Rohan, Thangadorai Sivanathan and Sammugarajah Gajendran by shooting near the Gandhi roundabout on January 2, 2006 and attempted murder of two others under Section 300 of the Penal Code read with section 32.
The CID had submitted seven productions to court in this connection and named 36 witnesses. Eight witnesses failed to appear in court and of them the fourth witness and eighth witness were absent as they had migrated to Switzerland and UK.
