Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, yesterday, said a politically motivated group had been behind last Sunday’s clashes at Poruthota, Negombo.

The Cardinal said that a group of persons in a state of inebriation had come to Negombo from another area and tried to create tension between the Catholics and Muslims who lived in harmony there and gain political advantage.

“I will not leave any room for anyone to attack the Muslims, taking mean advantage of the Easter Sunday attacks carried out by a group of Islamic extremists.

“I have already visited the area and held discussions with Muslim religious leaders and the people of Negombo. The security forces and the police were able to nip it in the bud.”

The prelate urged the people to act with restraint without playing into the hands of disruptive elements.

He called for a ban on liquor in the area.
