Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa who is facing a civil lawsuit alleging extra-judicial murder and crimes against humanity in the United States for the killing of Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunge, has requested a 30-day extension to respond to the charges.
The filing by his lawyers in the US District Court of Central California, seen by Sunday Observer is also first official confirmation that the former Sri Lankan Defence Secretary and US citizen had been served notice on April 7, 2019, despite stoic denials by his loyalists that he received any such notice.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa is being represented by Los-Angeles based prestigious law firm Arnold Porter and Kaye Scholer LLP. A partner at the firm, which is headquartered in Washington DC, John C. Ulin is the lawyer appearing in the case.
The motion to extend the time to respond states as follows: Whereas Plaintiff filed a complaint on April 4, 2019. Whereas Plaintiff served the Complaint on Defendant on April 7, 2019. Whereas Defendant’s response is currently due on April 29, 2019 .
Based on agreement between lawyers for the Plaintiff Ahimsa Wickrematunge, who filed the civil suit charging Rajapaksa with authorizing and instigating the murder of her father, the new response date has been set for May 28, 2019.
