UNP MP Hirunika Premachandra yesterday told Parliament that she had received information that there was a plan to grant a Presidential pardon to Duminda Silva who has been sentenced to death, on this year’s Independence Day February. 04
Speaking during the debate on Commissions of Inquiry (Amendment) Bill, Premachandra said that there was a group which goes door to door in Kolonnwa area to take signatures for a petition calling for a Presidential pardon for Duminda Silva.
“I do not know if the President has agreed to release Duminda Silva on February 04. But if he is given a Presidential pardon somehow, other prisoners who were convicted for drug-related offences would also request the President to release them.”
Premachandra criticized the recent conduct of President Sirisena as well. She said that the only regrettable thing in her life was that she campaigned for a person like Sirisena in 2015.
“It is not surprising if a person like President Sirisena who engaged in the political coup on October 26, 2018 decides to release a drug smuggler like Duminda Silva,” she added.
