Maj-Gen Shavendra Silva Appointed as 53rd Chief of Staff of the Sri Lankan Army.

Major General Shavendra Silva has been appointed as the 53rd Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army from yesterday.

Major General Silva is currently the Adjutant General and Colonel Commandant of the Gajaba Regiment. A proud product of the Sri Lanka Military Academy he was enlisted on the fifth of March 1984 to the regular intake 19. He has had an illustrious career from Second Lieutenant to Major General, covering all salient appointments in his military career.

He also served as the Ambassador and the Deputy Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York from 2010-2015.

He was the Alternative Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations Special Political and Decolonization Committee from 2010 and 2015. He was also Advisor of the Sri Lankan delegation to the United Nations Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs Committee. Being a Member of the Official Sri Lanka Delegation for the 66th, 67th, 68th and 69th United Nations General Assembly, Maj.Gen Silva participated in bilateral and multilateral consultations.

Maj Gen Shavendra Silva has held all Command appointments that an infantry officer could hold and also commanded the 58th Division and the Commando Brigade during the Humanitarian Operations. He also commanded the 53rd Division which is the Reserve Strike Force and also commanded the Air Mobile Brigade. Maj Gen Silva Commanded three Infantry Battalions during the crucial period of Sri Lankan Military. He had held key staff appointments in the Military Secretary’s Branch, the Directorate of Plans, the Directorate of Training and Staff officer to Security Forces Head Quarters, Jaffna.

At the end of the Humanitarian Operation in 2009, Maj. Gen. Silva was appointed as the Director General Operations at the Army Headquarters and was appointed as Colonel Commandant of the Commando Regiment.

He holds the honour of being the highest decorated military officer with numerous medals and he was the first Second Lieutenant of the Sri Lanka Army to receive three different gallantry medals at once, namely WWV, RWP, RSP. Maj. Gen. Silva is skilfully trained in diverse fields in the USA, Israel, Netherlands, Greece, Italy, France, Pakistan and India.

A Harvard University graduate, Maj. Gen. Silva holds an MSc in Philosophy in Defence and Strategic Studies in India.He is trained and qualified in psychology operations by the United States Army. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Command and Staff College and holds a Diploma in personnel management.

He is also an instructor in International Humanitarian Law and a qualified physical training instructor.

In appreciation of service rendered to the nation, Major General Shavendra Silva was also awarded the “Sri Lankeshwara Aparadha Meheyum Visharadha Jothikadhaja Veeraparthapa Deshamanya Jathika Gourawanama Sammana Upadhi Sannas Pathraya”, and the “Veera Gajendra Sangramasuri Jathika Gourawanama Sannaspathraya” and “ Weerawickrama Deshabhimani Wishwa Keerthi Sri Ranashura” (the most prestigious awards that a lay-person can receive) by the tri-sects of the Sri Lankan Buddhist order for devotion to preserve the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of the motherland.

He was recently named the “Mederata Abhimanya” (Pride of the Upcountry) by eminent personalities in the Central hill-country of Sri Lanka.

An old boy of St.Thomas College Matale, Major General Silva is the Chairman of the Defence Services Hockey committee and Army Hockey committee.
