The UNP said yesterday that it would institute legal action against the Podujana Peramuna for circulating a false agreement that the UNP had purportedly entered into with the TNA.

UNP MPs Ashu Marasinghe and Mujibur Rahuman, addressing the media at Temple Trees, yesterday evening, challenged the authors of the false agreement to a television debate.”They can pick a television channel that is favourable to them. We hope Udaya Gamanpilla and Wimal Weerawansa would accept our invitation.”

Marasinghe said that the so-called pact written in Sinhala had been purportedly signed by UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in English and TNA leader R.Sampanthan in Sinhala. “This clearly proves that this document is false. Wickremesinghe does not sign Sinhala statements in English and Sampanthan does not sign statements written in Sinhala.”

The punishment for forgery was a minimum of seven years rigorous imprisonment, Marasinghe noted, adding that the drafters of the latest purported UNP-TNA pact had obviously not learnt a lesson even after former General Secretary of the UNP Tissa Attanayake had been charged in courts, for forging the signatures of Wickremesinghe and Maithripala Sirisena in a false agreement with the TNA, during the last Presidential Election campaign.

The two MPs said that the purported pact between the UNP and TNA was full of blatant lies and meant to create racial hatred and conflict and drag the country back to war. “The TNA under its current leader R.Sampanthan says that the problems faced by Tamils should be resolved within a unitary state and it was wrong to claim that it has demanded a separate state. The TNA also does not want the military moved out of the North and East, nor has it called for a halt to the construction of Buddhist temples.”

They appealed to the Podujana Peramuna to stop their racist campaign that would only lead to violence and blood shed, pointing out that the TNA had voted for the motion calling for the appointment of Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister in Parliament yesterday, not due to any secret deals with the UNP, but because they wanted to end the constitutional crisis that President Maithripala Sirisena had created by appointing Mahinda Rajapaksa as Prime Minister on October 26, leading to chaos in Parliament and the government sector.
