Was There any Meaning in Sampanthan’s Act of Waving the national flag in Jaffna?

By S.L.Gunasekara

The UNP contested the elections for the Eastern Provincial Council under the name and symbol of the SLMC and under the leadership of Hakeem who has been a Minister in the Governments of Kumaratunga, Wickremesinghe and Rajapaksa and is presently a Minister in his multitudinous cabinet.

Sri Lanka flag in Spring breeze at Rockefeller Center, NY, NY on Apr 2, 2012

Everyone knew full well that the purpose of the exercise was for the SLMC to `profit’ from the votes of UNP supporters and for the UNP to `profit’ from the votes of SLMC supporters – in short, that it was a mercenary political marriage rooted in expediency with principle and the betterment of the Country being as foreign to it as a `flying saucer’.

Thus, neither the UNP nor its then senior partner the SLMC made any claim that that shoddy deal was born of a noble purpose to bring the East and the South together or to forge National Unity.

A few days ago, the Ranil Wickremesinghe faction of the UNP held a joint rally with the Sampanthan faction of the TNA. The object of the exercise was identical to the UNP’s previous exercise with the SLMC with which it had co-habited in Government and outside, and may well do so again.

That that object was purely and solely for the TNA to `profit’ from the votes of UNP supporters and for the UNP to `profit’ from the votes of TNA supporters was so patently obvious that it was unthinkable that anyone of sound mind could have thought differently.

Yet, many are the People who have failed or refused to accept that fact. In any event, it is nonsensical for parties which are incapable of forging unity among their own members to lay claims to forging National Unity.

In a propaganda exercise worthy of Josef Goebbels, the UNP, aided and abetted by the TNA trumpeted this shoddy exercise as being one that brought the North and the South together, was a giant step towards forging National Unity and constituted the consummation of the policies of the late Don Stephen Senanayake!!! They also sought to portray the dishonest charade of Sampanthan waving the National Flag as proof of this monumental fib.

How even the UNP could have been so utterly base as to defile the name and achievements of that long deceased National Leader par excellence in this malodorous exercise of seeking to clothe a vile effort at political chicanery in the lily white garb of a vestal virgin I cannot imagine.

However nonsensical, however mendacious this propaganda exercise was, tragically, many people believed or purported to believe it as many among even the German intelligentsia believed or purported to believe the lies trumpeted by Goebbels.

How is it that People who were not hoodwinked by the marriage of political convenience between the UNP and the SLMC, were so hoodwinked by the UNP’s latest marriage of political convenience?

The answer to this question, to my mind, is that many people are so fed up ‘to the gills’ with the ineptitude of Mahinda Rasjapasksa and his government and the resultant misgovernance [and at times ‘non governance’] of the country, that they are ready, willing and eager to believe anything whatsoever to the government’s detriment, while being wholly oblivious to the question of whether those who want to replace Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government have the competence and ability to run even a tea kiosk in a petti kaday!

Mahinda Rajapaksa and his bunch of `Yes Men’ who constitute the so-called ‘government must take serious note of this alarming fact and take remedial action to prevent the country falling into the clutches of a band of self-seeking power hungry politicians intent on ‘bettering’ for their own perceived benefit, the abuses now being committed by the Rajapaksa regime.

Was there any meaning in Sampanthan’s act of waving the Lion Flag that appears to have impressed so many? Was it simply a cosmetic exercise designed to deceive the gullible?

The National Flag symbolises our country and the Sri Lankan Nation, each of which is one and indivisible. If there was any meaning in Sampanthan’s said act, it must follow that he accepts this reality and jettisons the policies of the ITAK, the principal political ancestor of both the TULF and the TNA that the Tamils of Sri Lanka are a ‘Nation’, separate and distinct from the Sinhalese who constitute a separate Nation.

It would also mean that Sampanthan has jettisoned the other basic policies of the ITAK and its illegitimate off-spring, the TULF, that the Northern and Eastern Provinces are the “exclusive homeland of the Tamil People” and that the settlement of indigent/landless Sinhalese People in and around irrigation schemes in those Provinces must stop forthwith, while it was perfectly permissible to settle Tamil People in and around them. If Sampanthan’s act of waving the National Flag has some meaning and is not a mere empty gesture to deceive the gullible, he must necessarily make an express public pronouncement to that effect.

Whether Sampanthan would do so is not even a moot point. He will not, because his said act was nothing more than an empty gesture to deceive the gullible and gain political support. That cosmetic gesture of Sampanthan was as fraudulent as his oft expressed concern for the Tamil People and their welfare – for he, together with his party of shameless racists, accepted the LTTE as the ‘Sole Representatives of The Tamils’.

They did so while those purported ‘Sole Representatives’ kidnapped little Tamil children, extorted money from, abducted, enslaved and murdered those Tamils who would not, like the despicable TULF and TNA, cow down to and dance to the discordant tunes of the LTTE, and tormented the Tamils as no one has ever done before or since. The LTTE committed these atrocities without any observable protest from the TNA whether in its previous incarnation as the TULF or thereafter.

Indeed when the LTTE with the overt support of members of the TNA, by threats and intimidation deprived the students of Jaffna University of the priceless boon of having Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole as their Vice Chancellor, Sampanthan to whom his own perceived interests and fortunes were paramount, raised no audible voice of protest in favour of Prof. Hoole. When the LTTE was defeated however, Sampanthan and the TNA sought to distance themselves from the LTTE – an attempt that was as futile as that of Lady Macbeth to wash the blood from her hands.

The utter perfidy of the ‘flag waving’ Sampanthan and the TULF which he once led [and thereafter the TNA] becomes all the more despicable and revealing of the ‘characters’ of their members when one recalls the fact that they accepted these criminals as the `Sole Reptresentatives Of The Tamils’ even after they had foully murdered Amirthalingam, their former leader, Yogeswaran, Thangadurai [the former elected MP for Trincomalee whom Sampanthan replaced on the queue system consequent to his murder by the LTTE] and the sole heroine of the TULF Sarojini Yogeswaran.

Sampanthan’s colleagues in the TNA who are now critical of Sampanthan for waving the National Flag are not one whit better than he. They are as guilty as Sampanthan for their silent acquiescence in the atrocities committed by the LTTE on the Tamil People while professing a wholly dishonest concern and love for them.

They are also as guilty as Sampanthan for maintaining a silence that is not merely deafening but is treacherous as well about the thuggery practiced by India by lending its support to the thieving Indian Fisherman who regularly rob fish from our territorial waters in the North and East, thereby depriving the indigent Tamil fishermen of what should have been their catch and hence their livelihood. They could not have cared less about whether Sampanthan waved a National Flag or any other, and their protests are as empty cosmetic gestures as Sampanthan’s impugned act.

Let us not forget that despite their purported opposition to Sampanthan’s act of waving a National Flag. They remain members of the National Parliament, enjoy in full measure the salaries, allowances and munificent perquisites afforded to them as members of the National Parliament at the expense of the Sri Lankan Nation.

They engage in their frequent foreign trips as citizens of Sri Lanka on National passports. When they are obviously ready, willing and eager to accept the indisputable fact that they are members of the Sri Lankan Nation when it is to their material advantage to do so, what basis can there be for objecting or purporting to object to Sampanthan’s empty gesture of waving the National Flag?

Sampanthan, his supporters as well as those members of the TNA who purport to oppose his cosmetic gesture of waving a National Flag do not one whit for the Tamils, the Sinhalese or the Moors or any other inhabitants of our land but only for themselves. In this context, the fervid attempts being made by the government to get them to participate even in the proceedings of the nonsensical proposed Parliamentary Select Committee is nothing short of being downright stupid.

  1. The writer clearly wishes the country to be divided by race and religion, when neither should matter. In practical terms, the only way it can truly Unite is by engaging even with the Devil and try and turn them round. He just believes in black and white and that TNA will never change their spots. That may or may not be, only time will tell, but it took courage for the UNP to join with the SLMC in the East and attempt a joint rally despite a lot of opposition with TNA in Jaffna on May Day. There is nothing wrong with it in the eyes of a party attempting to unite the nation and a lot wrong with one who wants it divided.

A treacherous person such as the writer is warped in mind to see that it can never be done, and so there should be no rights for any other than one class. All that will do is it will leave the country permanently struggling to be schizophrenic, unless he gets the constitution of this country changed to a mono ethnic, buddhist state. If that is what he advocates, then it is consistent with his racist ideology and he is entitled to his opinion.

This attempt at belittling a party that is trying to unite, whilst being dismissive because of a petty internal conflict due to the attempt of a political minor who is above his station trying to bark louder than he can bite is ludicrous.

The party is bigger and stronger than the Ranils and Sajths and it stands for a United Sri Lanka that encompasses all races and creeds in a multi ethnic and multi religious harmonius community. It is obviously very different to that envisaged by the writer.

  2. SLG in Conspiracy Land. All sorts of conspiracy and intrigue abound and there is no hope for a peacefull settlement of problems. We need solutions for the future not confused polemics of the past. Reflects on the mental state of the author.

  3. Unlike SLG, I say, waving the national flag by Sambandan watched by members of his faction is by no means a simple act.

  4. Got to disagree. Empty gesture or not, it was brave of him to do so, considering the opposition within his own party, and the very recent violent history in the area he waved the flag. He send quite a clear message and set a firm foot on the best cause of action for tamils – engage with the majority.

For that, he gets my respect.

A reciprocal gesture by the government should be made.

  5. Sampanthan is sending a clear massage to the world that they are not asking a separate country for the Tamils.

That has been the position since July 29th 1987…………..DBSJ

  6. Senathi says:

“Sampanthan is sending a clear massage to the world that they are not asking a separate country for the Tamils.”

No one in their right mind believed in this much hyped separate state which wrought immense suffering to the people of the island.

The Vattukottai Resolution was dead on arrival.

LTTE was carrying the coffin with a lifeless body for nearly 30 years, in the course of it, it was instrumental in producing more dead bodies with the support of Sri Lankan armed forces.

Sri Lankan state pretends that the idea of Separate is alive and kicking even to this day. For the state it is only a numbers game. If you care to look at my people’s experience in the past 2,000 years you would understand what I mean.

On the other hand being stupid, both the Sinhalese and Tamils will never understand.

  7. Now you are talking, Mr Gunasekara.

Evidently TNA supporters were holding the Tiger Flag in the audience, while Mr Sambandan was waving the Lion Flag.

Ranil’s most talented buddy Mr Ravi, got shafted by the ITN Boss, for his usual dishonest attempts to pin the blame on Gota for the Tiger Flag.

Between Sambandan and Ranil ,they will win a few seats in the Jaffna Tamil heartlands in the North and the Capital.

Would that be enough to roll Rajapaksa?.

Even mug punters wouldn’t put money on that.

Even as late as yesterday Mr Premchandran has said that they haven’t changed anything.

They want Rajapaksa to write them the deeds on his own.

If Rajapaksa is dumb enough to do that , then of course Ranil will have a better than even money chance, with the sloagan “Raja sold the Nation ” pasted all over the South Sinhala Heartland.

Other than that imagine the UNP aiming to be first past the post, with Sambandan waving the Lion Flag d anholding hands with Ranil in the South, when the next round of elections are around.

Dirty Tricks dept was waving Tiger flags for ITN………DBSJ

  8. S.L. Gunasekara writes about,

“the thieving Indian Fishermen who regularly rob fish from our territorial waters in the North and East, thereby depriving the indigent Tamil fishermen of what should have been their catch and hence their livelihood”.

The man is shedding crocodile tears for the Tamil fishermen in the North and East. God knows that for a very long time now, they have suffered far more at the hands of the Sri Lanka Army and Navy than from the depredations of the Indian fishermen.

  9. “They did so while those purported ‘Sole Representatives’ kidnapped little Tamil children, extorted money from, abducted, enslaved and murdered those Tamils who would not, like the despicable TULF and TNA, cow down to and dance to the discordant tunes of the LTTE, and tormented the Tamils as no one has ever done before or since. The LTTE committed these atrocities without any observable protest from the TNA whether in its previous incarnation as the TULF or thereafter”

    Regarding the above paragraph”

The present govt. under the leadership of the “war criminals” are doing and did the SAME CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES done by the LTTE!!! The Govt. also killed many elected Tamil representatives, many innocent civilians, journalists, priests and “white vanned” and disappeared many Tamils including babies and children, Sinhalese and still doing so every day in the all over the island, more so in the north and east, where civilians are killed like dogs!!They are still starving the Tamil children and war victims without providing adequate food and livelihood by grabbing their land and livelihood and giving it away to Sinhalese thugs!!

Have the “enlightened sinhalese” demanded any explanation for the thousands and thousands of Tamils killed, ever since independence? LTTE is the by product of successive Sinhalese govts’ ill treatment of the Tamils. If the govt. is a “democratically” elected body it has a duty to protect all its citizens, not only the sinhalese!! Since independence the successive governments both green and blue (In Sri Lanka green becomes blue for perks and money in a jiffy!!)has failed in its duty and hence has no right to “rule” the Tamils, whom they have failed to represent again and again!!!

The government passes laws without a “murmur” from the “enlightened sinhalese”, so that the said “government and its extended family” can “rule” till this universe exists!! Jungle law prevails in the whole country and no one has the courage to protest!!How long will they blame the LTTE for the lawlessness which existed ever since Independence?

  10. Sampanthan has been waving the Lion flag because he said that is her goddess Pathrakaali’s Flag. What is wrong of Cathalics are hoisting Vatican flag here. You can adore our Bharatha theasam flag in Jaffna. Some one who waved tiger flag at the May Day rally might be an Iyyappan devotee. As a citizen of secular Eelam state I am searching for the abandoned NEPC flag to revive and to respect all believing as an Eelam flag.
    I’m Eelam

  11. Mr.S.L.Gunesekera…..in your article about ” the yes men and the govt of hangers on” you very well exposed to the entire country that the President is an impotent in terms of Governing a Nation…..because he has no erection…. Please ….please do not get it wrong….it is Vertebrae…..

Your words …..”The answer to this question, to my mind, is that many people are so fed up ‘to the gills’ with the ineptitude of Mahinda Rasjapasksa and his government and the resultant misgovernance [and at times ‘non governance’] of the country, that they are ready, willing and eager to believe anything whatsoever to the government’s detriment, while being wholly oblivious to the question of whether those who want to replace Mahinda Rajapaksa and his government have the competence and ability to run even a tea kiosk in a petti kaday!

Mahinda Rajapaksa and his bunch of `Yes Men’ who constitute the so-called ‘government must take serious note of this alarming fact and take remedial action to prevent the country falling into the clutches of a band of self-seeking power hungry politicians intent on ‘bettering’ for their own perceived benefit, the abuses now being committed by the Rajapaksa regime.”

Firstly you say that the President Rajapakse and his Govt of yes men are not suitable to run even a Petti Kaday….and you contradict you own words in the next Paragraph by asking him to be mindful of a dangerous trend..to prevent the country falling into the clutches of power hungry men….!!!!!!!! Though he is not good to run a Petti Kaday ..are you saying that you prefer him better than the next lot ?….

The people of this Country have realized long before that he and his gang rules the country as if it is HIS inheritance…the sickness that many who ruled this Country had since independence …….. but he claims that right and demands to behave in that manner ONLY because …HE…finished the armed conflict in the country by killing his own Countrymen!!!! …the way his gang of yes men sing hosanna it is clearly visible…..

Beacuse of this realization by the people…they voted for an alternative at the last Presidential Election…it is also to say that they are 100% in agreement with you…..However it may not be your choice and also the ..king? has no right to demand the people to bloody well vote him in…….IT IS THE CHOICE OF THE PEOPLE THAT MATTER….THAT SHOULD BE RESPECTED…..the bunch of 225 jokers comprising the Ruling party who call themselves the Govt and the major opposition party thinks that there should not be any alternative in this country to govern …..but them….only them…..and that they are the CLAN…..who robbed the right from the people….authority given to the clans since independence …to Govern not to Rule.and why ?.. IT IS THE CHOICE OF THE PEOPLE THAT WAS ROBBED…..THAT IT NOW DELIVERS A DISTORTED PICTURE…..AT EVERY SELECTION OR ELECTION

As much has you have the right to say what you feel about anyone or about the Govt…..anyone in this Country has the right to do what he wishes in line with the Laws of the Country….under such circumstances .WHY oh why an intellect like you worry about whether MR. SAMBANTHAN…WAVED or as many news papers say RAISED THE SRI LANKAN FLAG….OR WAIVED OR RAISED HIS VETTI……mind you it is his Choice and he may be trying to say something to the World …Country….the puerile ruling clan by that action….please criticise but do not bring them to disrepute with racial prejudices & hatred……what if they write about you or against any politicians in this Country……in a similar manner….. .? because it is the CHOICE……they do not criticise the President in that manner in mass media…..

Mr. Gunesekera it is difficult to understand what you are trying to say……we do not sometimes understand because you are a well read intellect…But keep in mind observant people understand the way these intellect distort truth for survival……. for sure it is is too early for you to hit dementia….academias rarely miss points…. but it is certain that you are also in the category of the people who tries to ….. with ….. hiding the …….
your guess is as good as mine…please.

  12. TNA is not representing the OLD FP or TULF now. Sambandan proved it by saying the LTTE are the “sole” representatives of the Tamils. He also joined UNP like Prabhakaran to save the interest of Americans or other Westerners.

Did UNP promised any Police Powers and Land Powers to Tamils?

  13. I don’t understand.

What’s the big deal one waving his national flag. In this case Sampanthan.

But it is a big deal when Rajapakse waved Tiger flag in the same May day rally. Okay, he didn’t do it by himself, but his agent.

  14. Looking at the beaming photo of Anoma Fonseka ,flanked by the two leaders of the more popular UNP Faction of Prema Jr,it is obvious that the Ex General will head this faction, sooner than later.

Has Hon Mr Ranil Wickremasinghe, the Leader of the other Faction, done another “gillmart” in Jaffna to save his ass yet again, the same way he did at the last Prez election, on the back of our naive ex General?.

With Fonseka in the bag and Sambandan no where to be seen, UNP Prema Faction seems to be gaining ground in the South, which is the real “Business end”.

If Mr Sambandan is fairdinkum in giving his supporters a chance to get any solutions to their grievances, jettison his Tiger baggage, and join the main stream to wave the Lion Flag in real terms, shouldn’t he seriously consider, holding hands with Prema Junior and Karu Jayasuriya?.

The NSB.TFC saga is a good example of how shallow the UNP Ranil Faction is when it comes to matters of Economics and Markets.although they claim monopoly on these issues by their association with the capitalist West . the US in particular.

“UNP breaths fire on NSB” says the English media.

Despite Harsha making his throat hoarse, the deal is not a normal buy and sell.

But he is trying to make it the epitome of all Econmic and management evil.

Even if the transaction was completed, the loss apparently is only LKR 150 Million, and that even only on paper, because TFC hasn’t gone under.

Even if it has, isn’t it peanuts , when Companies lose Billions of Dollars in take overs, mergers and acquisitions where Mr Harsha perhaps got his PhD?.

Prema Faction in contrast is on about building popularity and credibility.

This writer is spot on when he says there is no talent on the Opposition benches.

  15. “Set a thief to catch a thief” the saying goes. So too in Lanka was it necessary to set a terrorist to catch a terrorist. The fact is that while the LTTE was a horrific bunch of terrorists, so too is Gotabaya Rajapakse and his gang who “defeated terrorism” and are now white vanning people and militarizing Lanka to stay in power forever.

In Buddhism we talk about Karma vipaka. Now that the LTTE has thankfully been eleminated from Lanka, so too do we need to purge the country of State terrorism and the State terror machine and the Rajapakse goons to operate it, if Sri Lanka is to once again become a land of peace and a resplendent isle This is the karma vipaka of the the Rajapakse regime which they have to carry as part of samsara.. and we have to do what we can to cleanse the country of the great violence committed by both the LTTE and the Rajapakse regime!

  16. Sambandan waving the National Flag may have given several different messages. The most important is the message it gave M Karunanidhi and his Eelam cry.

  17. This flag waving issue, UNP & TNA join forces in Jaffna for May Day, does not concern the ordinary common man, all these Politicians could be seen in the Rogues Gallery show once they achieve power , what we need is a change in the system.

we need honest disciplined & ethical Socialist politicians. One may argue there is no such politicians in SriLanka, why not some unbiased Media or organization investigate the JVP breakaway Frontline Socialist Party or JVP itself.

  18. More than what SLG tried to convey by his article, it exposes his own racialistic minset and his trust in the rowdy type Sinhala intransigent paranoic governance.

  19. Tamils are too wise to fight war. War destroys both parties. Some agreement would be nice but no agreement will also result in peace. Both people can move on. US simply wanted to advocate a pacification program in Geneva and didn’t mean to impose a solution. Even though the true barbaric nature of people has been exposed, it takes two parties to fight and definitely there will be peace going forward.

  20. The author’s assertion of Mr Sampanthan’s acts as a mere gesture and, done to gain political mileage puzzles me, as those who understood the local politics knew his act was politically suicidal one, one will please his opponents only, may be author is one of them. His image can be tarnished, citing he betrayed Tamils’ cause. Despite the risk that he knew what/how it could be interpreted and twisted by those who do not think politic and honesty should go hand in hand, he had the nerve, and did it. Every one in SL should see more politicians to emerge like him. The act is commendable, although it was symbolic, doing it whilst holding the position of leader of TNA signifies and, is an indicative of, that Tamils living in the land have been distancing themselves from the confrontational politic instead, preparing them to accept what a realistic politic brings about. This, during LTTE era and before, the time leading into ending up having Vadukoddai resolution, was not the case. The leader, of the party which represents on its own right the majority of the Tamils has been advocating for a fair and reasonable, and lasting solution under a unitary system and his action simply proves just tha,t he is a walk to walk person, not a talk to talk one.

I suppose the people in the South including the author feel threaten when he saw the moot change in TNA and this act, which rubber stamps hierarchy of the TNA latest stands, dealing with GoSL. Instead of welcoming such act, went on to pairing Mr Sampanthan with Ranil and citing latter’s shortcomings is an attempt to water down the importance of this occasion and the act.

Southerners would not know what kind of iron grip was that Tamils were under, be a politician or an individual when VP was on the top. To blame them now for not being able to utter a word against LTTE is nothing more than ignorance of the one insulting as he/ she does not have either the capacity to comprehend or just pretend. Those who knew Sampanthan know he was not for Tamil Eelam, this he cannot go and say to VP, however, he has had times with Anton Balasingam debating the issues, and when AB realised it was not winnable, he seemed to have used the fear factor. After a few debates, a wise man Sampanthan, who is a true blue moderate politician, knew there was no point in arguing with them on whether TE is possible or not or when to achieve it, even with so called idiotic ideologist. For him, it was clear that, even those on the top in LTTE did not have answers for those issues. Only thing LTTE was sure about was the enemy-that is GoSL. It was all in the past, and all is over. To resurrect LTTE is the need of extremists in both sides, particularly, the southerners. Clear evidence is, carrying LTTE flag in the Jaffna May Day rally, organised allegedly by a TV station aligned with GoSL.

What is needed today and, now is to resolving this issue. Going back to say there was no issues specific for Tamils, after the awareness of whole issue has crossed over the sovereign boarder and spread all over the world, is a ploy to buy some time and lead this country into a failed state and for total destruction. There has been enough evidence that Sampanthan and Sumanthiran duo is trying hard to get this issue resolved even at the expenses of their political fortunes. Yet, they knew the folly in participating at APC. Sampanthan knew that his days are numbered due to him illness, and wants to take the maximum out remaining years of his life. He likes to be truthful for himself than any jokers who criticise him, a quality licks in almost all politicians.

Foe the rest of the TNA, who still believes talking racist slogan could be the only way to prolong your political career, we who live here know you have one foot hold on overseas and the other here to grab on whatever available here. So we understand you have an agenda to promote what you have been trying to promote. Please keep your rhetoric to your workplace- parliament.

Sampanthan raising Lion flag creates more worry to GoSL and some of the southerners who like to think they can subjugate and make Tamils third or forth class citizen in this country in the pretext of suppressing terrorism than he simply raising any flags for your orgasm, which last to a few seconds. Be logical rather than getting caught in the opportunistic politicians’ bamboozling, which would make you feel nothing but good momentarily. Wake up folks.

  21. Ayyo SL.

    Get your facts right man!

On the day, Mahinda mama tried to discredit the UNP-TNA meeting by getting some chokka to wave a LTTE flag.

Ranil Wickes trumped Mahinda and the LTTE flag waving chokkas by getting TNA to wave the Lion flag……

    There……..

  22. People like SL wish the country divided on racial lines.if,he is genuine, about unity and peace,he should encourage and appreciate positive signs for national unity and settlement on the basis of a unified lanka, shown by a bold sampanthan. It is easy to criticise.

  23. Sampanthan waving Lion flag ,GOSL waving Tiger flag are good news. Both nations accepting each others rights
and not killing each others are very good news, you know? ‘Devide and Unite’ is latest idea created by new school of thought. Both can empower their Land without discrimination and work together as Union with in one united island.

  24. Not a single word about the thousands of Tamil victims at the hands of the Sri Lanka state since the 1950s. Then again, what can you expect from this writer.

As for the flags, to the Sinhalese, the Tiger flag represents suicide bombings, murder, mayhem, assasinations, fear, aerial bombings etc. Their hatred for the Tiger flag is understandable and justified.

To the Tamils, the Lion flag represents pogroms, murder, rape, lootings, assasinations, racism, humiliation, discrimination, carpet bombings etc. Their hatred for the Lion flag is understandable and justified. Yet the Tamils are expected to wave the hated Lion flag? Sadly this is the so-called reconciliation, Sri Lankan style.

  25. When karunanithi started to wave the eelam flag again, sampanthan started to wave the lion flag.A very clear message to karu to not wave the eelam flag while simultaneously waving the Indian chakra flag.karu has to decide which one he wants, the chakra or seperate tamilnadu flag.
