President Maithripala Sirisena has notified the founder of the ‘Pohottuwa’ party Basil Rajapaksa to take measures to provide him with affidavits to show majority in parliament within the next 48 hours, according to government internal sources.
The President had summoned the SLFP –MPs yesterday and notified them to prove that they have parliamentary majority within the next three days.
Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena who was appointed by the President told media that, “The President insisted that he would not carry on with a government headed by Ranil Wickremesinghe under any circumstance. He asked us to show our majority and continue with our work,” he said.
The President had said this when he met the SLFP members after the no confidence motion.
It is also reported that the President had reprimanded Thilanga Sumathipala, S.B. Dissanayake and Lakshman Wasantha Perera who had earlier assured him that they could obtain the support of over 113 MPs.

Meanwhile, it is reported that with this situation arising, the asking rate of MPs has escalated even higher and that the current cross over rates are in millions.
In his address to the nation recently, President Maithripala Sirisena said that there was news that the MPs were being sold for money during the recent crisis.
The President in his special address said, “The situation of the country’s highest institution that holds the franchise of the people, the parliament, had deteriorated to great extent politically, socially and ethically, with the MPs being sold for Rs. 100-150 million with others demanding as much as Rs. 500 million during the latter stages.”
