Sri Lanka’s police Tuesday arrested a man for sharing a bottle of beer with his one-year-old son and detained three others for filming what police consider to be cruelty to a child and releasing it on Facebook.
Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said police carried out investigations following the viral video made at the village of Meehalewa in the Anuradhapura district on Monday showing the child being given beer while others watched.
The 77-seconds-long video showed the father sharing his bottle of beer twice with the child while several voices in the background egged him on. There was at least one voice which spoke against giving alcohol to the child. The video ends with the child pointing to the bottle in a gesture asking for more.
The toddler was taken to a doctor for an examination while his 40-year-old father and three of his associates were charged for cruelty to a child, an offence carrying a prison sentence of up to 10 years, Gunasekera said.
Sri Lanka’s police have been following videos of social media and recently prosecuted 10 people who killed a leopard that strayed into a village in the north of the island and attacked a dozen people.
Six people were jailed in March 2016 after posting photos online showing them skinning a sea eagle alive.
