Sustainable Development, Wildlife and Regional Development Minister Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, yesterday, apologised to President Maithripala Sirisena for publicly having criticised the latter, recently.
Political sources said that Fonseka had apologised to the President after the conclusion of Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. The former Army Chief had been accompanied by PM Wickremesinghe, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Nimal Siripala de Silva and Malik Samarawickrema.
Minister Fonseka recently tore into the President at the UNP May Day meeting on May 6. He said it was a mistake on the UNP’s part to have fielded Sirisena as the common candidate. Fonseka proposed that Wickremesinghe be nominated to contest as the common presidential candidate of the yahapalana camp.
