US Ambassador Athul Keshap and Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandu have met President Maithripala Sirisena in an attempt to diffuse the current political crisis in Sri Lanka.

The top diplomats, in two separate meetings, have informed President Sirisena to find a speedy solution to the current issue, without jeopardizing the political stability in Sri Lanka.

They had indicated that an agreement with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe would bring the current crisis to an end. However, some of President Sirisena’s close advisers are preventing the President from arriving at an agreement with Prime Minister Wickremesinghe.

The current tension arising from the landslide victory of the Sri Lanka Podujana Party, a movement supported by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has brought the government to a standstill.

The UNP has already decided to form a government on its own. The UPFA, the other coalition partner of the UNP government, has decided to part ways if Ranil Wickremesinghe continues to be the Prime Minister.

However, the President, who holds executive powers, is yet to respond to the UNP’s decision
