There had been no agreement between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe regarding future political action, President’s Media Division (PMD) said issuing a press release.
“A number of media institutions have published stories saying that an agreement was reached between the President and the Prime Minister regarding future political activities,” the PMD said.
However, no such agreement, either on securing power in Local Government Bodies or the future course of action of the government, was reached. Thus media reports claiming that such an agreement has taken place are false.
Media has earlier reported that the President and Prime Miniser met on February 11 and agreed that Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United national Party (UNP) should continue the current coalition government till 2020.
SLFP to decide whom to back in local bodies
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) will decide in the future how the elected SLFP and United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA) local councillors should act regarding the establishment of Local Government administrations, General Secretary of the UPFA, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said yesterday issuing a press release.
He said that the Elections Commission had not officially informed the UPFA or the SLFP about councillors to be appointed through the additional list. “After the Commission informs us of those appointments, we will decide on that matter as well,” the Minister said.
The General Secretary also thanked all the candidates, supporters and voters of the party as well as the Elections Commission.
