Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that though many wanted his photograph to be printed on their campaign posters for the forthcoming election campaign, only the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), which had the lotus bud as its symbol had a right to do so.
Rajapaksa said so, addressing the candidates contesting the forthcoming local government elections on the SLPP ticket, at the Sugathadasa Indoor stadium.
The manifesto of the SLPP-led alliance was also launched at the event.
Copies of the manifesto were presented to the Maha Sangha, other religious leaders and the leaders of the constituents of the alliance.
The former President said that all the candidates contesting the forthcoming local government elections under the SLPP banner had to honour the pledge taken yesterday. He urged the candidates to consider the upcoming polls a campaign against the sale of national assets and the unbearable economic burden the government had placed on the masses.
