MPs Namal Rajapaksa, DV Chanaka, Prasanna Ranaweera and three provincial councillors were arrested by Hambantota police late last evening over the Joint Opposition protest at Hambantota last Friday.
They were taken into custody when they had arrived at the Hambantoa Police station to make their statements.
Five more suspects have been arrested in connection with the October 6 protest in Hambantota. Police arrested two of the suspects in Sooriyawewa while three were taken into custody in Sevanagala. The arrests were made during raids conducted on Sunday night (8) and Mondday.
Four of the suspects were produced before the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where they were ordered to be remanded till October 16.
With the latest arrests, the number of suspects arrested in connection with the incident has gone up to 39, police said.
