Hambantota District UPFA MP Namal Rajapaksa yesterday alleged that police personnel had unleashed what he called terror against protest staged by the Joint Opposition at Hambantota on Friday also taken into custody even some patients waiting in the queues at hospitals.
“Police not only tear gassed and used water cannon to disperse our peaceful protest but also made arrests en masse. They took some eluderly women waiting at the queues at Ayurveda and government hospitals,” MP Rajapaksa said.
He said the Joint Opposition Members had had no intention of creating trouble. “We went there to conduct a peaceful demonstration against the government’s plan to sell off the Mattala Airport. We did not block the road, nor did we act against the court order. The police cracked down on us. There were thugs attacking us from behind the police barricades..
“The government is planning to give away 65,000 acres from the Uva and 35,000 acres from Hambantota to foreign companies. In addition, it is planning to hand over all fisheries harbours to foreign companies. We do not need a government which sells the national assets to foreigners. We staged our protest to condemn such acts. The police attacked the peaceful protest.”
