The Leader of the Opposition R. Sampanthan, in Parliament yesterday commended MP Ravi Karunanayake for resigning from his Ministerial post. He added that it was fundamental right of a person accused of a crime to be presumed innocent till proven guilty.
“It is a fundamental right of a person accused of a crime to be presumed innocent until he is proven guilty. I commend MP Karunanayake for the bold step he has taken. He has done so in the interest of good governance and the people”
The Opposition leader made these remarks soon after MP Karunanayake tendered his resignation to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya in the face a barrage of allegations connecting MP Karunanayake to the Central Bank bond scams.
“It is significant that a minister from the government has resigned when there are many other individuals in this House with charges of corruption levelled against them. MP Karunanayake has set a good example––one that many others would do well to follow,” Sampanthan said.
