UNHRC vote in Geneva shows that Muslim countries were Sri Lanka’s sincere friends

In times of crisis in Sri Lanka, Muslims countries have always come to the island’s rescue with no strings attached. This friendly gesture was demonstrated once again by Muslim countries when they voted against the US sponsored United Nations Human Rights Council resolution against Sri Lanka.

While the European countries as a whole sided with the US, almost every Muslim country either supported Sri Lankan or abstained.

For example Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bangladesh Maldives, Mauritania and Indonesia voted against the resolution defying the US.

Four more Muslim countries, Malaysia, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan and predominantly Muslim Senegal abstained thus depriving the US of large majority.

Surprisingly our new found friend the Zionist state of Israel co-sponsored the US resolution.

Under the circumstance isn’t it time that Sri Lanka begins to understand who the island’s sincere friends are and cultivate better relationships with them?

However support of Muslim countries has always been taken for granted by not only the island’s politicians and bureaucrats but also the mainstream media which never misses an opportunity to portray a negative picture of Muslims. In the local dailies, especially the English language ones, the three votes of Russia, China and Cuba were given a lot of fanfare on front pages while the larger number of Muslim votes did not merit even a single column space. Sadly this has been the traditional attitude of mainstream media in the island.

Muslims worldwide, especially those in the Middle East, have a fondness for Sri Lanka because of its support for the legitimate Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation of Palestinians lands. From Yemen in the Red Sea to Egypt and even North Africa, the moment they come to know that you are a Sri Lankan a pleasant smile of recognition appears on their faces. The perfunctory response from people of all walks of life in the Arab lands used to be “Oh Bandaranaike “in view of former Prime Minister Mrs. Srimavo Bandaranaike’s close ties with the Arab world.

Mrs. Bandaranaike pledged in her election manifesto in 1970 that she would shut down the Israeli Mission in Colombo if she was voted to power. On account of this pledge and departing from the established tradition of voting for the UNP, Muslims in large number voted for her United Front government. On assuming office, one of the first steps taken by her government was to fulfill the promise she gave in her manifesto. This decision was welcome with great appreciation and admiration by the Arab countries.

Pakistan was one of the first countries to respond to Sri Lanka’s urgent plea to airlift arms when violent political uprising by Janatha Vimukthi Permuna (JVP) erupted to topple the government. This timely help played a crucial role in crushing the uprising.

Later, as an influential member of the Non Aligned Movement, Mrs. Bandaranaike had been in the forefront of world events in highlighting Third World issues and thus was in the limelight in the third world countries .This put the tiny island on the international political map. Muslim countries like Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Algeria and others co-operated fully with her government when the island hosted the 1976 Non Aligned Nations’ Summit Conference in Colombo.

Muslim nations supported Ms. Bandaranaike with one voice in the United Nations General Assembly when she submitted the Non Aligned Colombo Summit proposal to declare “Indian Ocean a Zone of Peace”. Her speech at the UN General Assembly, as head of the Non Aligned Movement, was completely ignored by the Jewish controlled Western media while it received wide coverage throughout the Muslim world.

Under strong Israeli pressure, when Britain threatened to boycott Sri Lankan tea, then Trade Minister T.B.Ilangaratne, said in defiance that “Sri Lankans may eat grass, but would not change the decision to close down the Israeli mission here”.

This firm policy of supporting the just struggle of Palestinian cause won the hearts and minds of people in the Middle East and elsewhere. Countries like Iraq, Pakistan, Libya and Iran emerged as some of the largest importers of the island’s tea and other products.

In the same vein as President of the Sri Lankan Committee for Palestinian People, President Mahinda Rajapakse supported the Palestinians for three long decades. He handed over that responsibility to Minister Athauda Seneviratne only after assuming office as Prime Minister.

Of course these friendly ties continued unabated though disrupted time and again during the pro Western United National Party governments. For example President J.R.Jayawardene declared arrogantly that he would bring the Israelis to crush the Tamil Tigers and the Muslim members could leave the government if they disagree.

He forced his foreign Minister A.C.S Hameed to support the move in parliament. Hameed did support the move in the parliament for reasons better known to him but never forgave himself for this act until he went to his grave. Dr M.C.M. Kaleel, the respected Chairman of United National Party who spent his life for the party was devastated and humiliated on account of this act of betrayal by J.R. Jayawardene. Fed up of Jayewardene’s arrogance, Muslims shifted their loyalties to the All Ceylon Muslim Congress which, further polarized the communities, and turned out to be a tragedy of Himalayan proportions to the Muslims in particular and the country as a whole.

However to Jayewardene’s shock and embarrassment, instead of helping to wipe out the Tamil Tigers, the Israelis who thrive on others’ misery trained both the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lanka’s armed forces simultaneously in the same area as stated in the Israeli spy’s book “By Way of Deception”.

In the footstep of Late President Jayewardene, equally pro western Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe’s government was perhaps the only third world government in the word to support the American invasion of Iraq which turned the hapless nation into a grave yard. When Muslim parliamentarians resisted Mr. Wickremasinghe, he in the same degree of arrogance as his uncle told them”you can leave the government if you disagree with party policy”. Despite Jayewardene’s and Ranil Wickremasinghe’s pro Western policy of hob knobbing with Israelis, Muslim countries always continued their friendly ties with Sri Lanka. Israel has once again, true to form, has stabbed Sri Lanka by stabbing the nation in the back.

Meanwhile when the development boom began in the Gulf countries in the aftermath of the oil boom in the early 1970s, these countries opened their doors for the island’s workforce. Since then there are around a million Sri Lankans workers in the six member Gulf Cooperation Council countries which include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Bahrain. They remit billions and help our economy besides paving the way for better political, economic, cultural and social ties.

Muslim countries stood behind Sri Lanka and its people even in the recent effort to crush the LTTE. In fact many Muslim countries especially Pakistan, Libya and Iran helped the island a great deal during the island’s final assault in the defeat of the Tamil Tigers. Moreover, Muslim countries like Pakistan, Iran, Libya, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf have given billions in aid for numerous development projects. Sadly hardly any articles appear in the local newspapers, mags or TV giving due coverage to such positive stories. Instead, what we see are highly negative stories when a housemaid falls into trouble with her employers.

Ignoring all these facts many politicians, bureaucrats, professionals and the media in general openly hobnob with the Israelis paying no attention to the feelings of the Arabs or Muslim community in the island.

Some may ask “what is wrong in establishing ties with Israel as some Arab countries too recognized Israel”. Yes, some Arab dictators recognized Israel to please America so that their power could be maintained and keep the looted wealth of their people in Swiss banks. However people in these countries treated these tyrants with contempt as they watch the atrocities Israel commits on a daily basis against the hapless Palestinians.

In fact traditionally the island’s mainstream media has been rather indifferent towards Muslim issues both here and abroad. This could be partly attributed to their being brainwashed by the Western media, an integral extension of the West’s war machine, for their international coverage. The Western media has been employed by US led European war mongers to justify their invasions and destructions of poor Third World countries which include Vietnam and many South American, African and Arab nations. Inevitably the local media, depending on this propaganda machine, too come under their influence and thus fail to highlight the plight of the victims of US-European aggressions.

As a result local media too have been influenced by the Western media’s evil campaign against Islam and Muslims .This perhaps may be the reason why the local media fail to highlight Anglo-American genocides in Iraq, Afghanistan ,Palestine, Somalia Yemen and now in Pakistan to cite a few cases. Here too, except for a few, they are afraid to publish the victims’ sufferings even if they are provided with the facts as they are.

For example, wide publicity was given to around 300 Sri Lankans recruited to work in the Israeli agricultural sector. However more than a million Sri Lankans happily live and work in the Gulf States. Do the local media highlight these positive developments? Instead even before verifying the truth, media scream highlighting incidents involving problems of maids projecting Gulf people as whole as heartless barbarians.

Isn’t it time that the country as a whole and the ultra nationalist who got into powerful positions, open their eyes and realize the reality and change their views on local Muslims and Muslim countries in their own interests and in the interest of the country?

  1. In general, I don’t believe any side is fully right or fully wrong, but when it comes to the Arab-Israeli problem, I think the Arab Palestinians have been more wronged by the Israelis than the other way around. My sympathies are with the Palestinians, but they too should fix themselves.. Waiting for Israel to take its hand off the Arabs is wishful thinking..

  2. Moslems have since the past several decades been anti-American and anti-Western. They have been demonstrating almost every other after Friday prayers against these countries for their actions in other Islamic countries of the world. When something happens in Iraq or Iran or Syria or Pakistan….. they demonstrate here very violently.

Anyhow, let the past be past. Sinhalese, Tamils and all other communities in this country, however, have to forget their past and make every effort to forge as a strong nation. No one cannot be happy by subjugating one community or the other. We have only a few years of life in this world. No one is going to live for ever. So, make it pleasant and livable sincerely and honestly.

  3. Well Tamils have stronger reason than Palestinian or even Israelis. For me I think Muslims in SL is Tamil or Sinhalese, definitely not Arabs/Persians. It is good those Tamils and Sinhalese following Islam come under one umbrella calling them self Muslims or distinct community. For me they are Tamils and we are not with LTTE/others on what they did to fellow Muslims Tamils.

My understanding, Middle-East mostly desert, always been volatile, as people comes and go. I think it was Africans/Negroid were the natives of Middle-East, later ever-looking-for-resources white Europeans entered Middle-East may have created the current Arab mix stocks. Later that mix may have come to Indus Valley looking-for-resources in the name of Aryans.

All were Jewish in the region, who accepted Jesus became Christians and those rejected continued to stay as Jewish. From those accepted Jesus and some Jewish accepted Mohammed and became Muslims. If this is correct, then Jerusalem/Israel/Palestine or most of Middle-East do belong to Muslims, Christians and Jewish. However, I don’t understand the logic behind Jewish from Russia/Eastern Europe/North America/Europe settling down in Middle East chasing out Arabs. It sounds like Muslims from Indonesia/Phillipines/Bangaldesh can settle down in Israel/Palestine claiming it as their native lands…

Pakistan is a mess, and it will continue to blame India and US but it a mission impossible to clean itself (hope SL doesn’t become another Pakistan). India-Pakistan separation was to move the Muslims to Pakistan to empower them. Unfortunately, Pakistan is still ruled mainly by Punjab Muslims (or Eastern clan). Western parts (closer to Afghanistan/Iran) are still considered lower cast have no power. Until Pakistan takes care of their western citizens and clean up their politics they can never come out their mess.

Everyone knows US/Western countries’ agenda for all their gulf wars but no body knows the “goal” behind Taliban or Al-Quida. Unfortunately those fighting are poor western Pakistanis or Afghanistanis but those in charge are well settle and close friends working closely with US/Western foreign policy makers.

Well most of the Middle-East/Arab countries supporting SL, could be because of Ms. Bandaranayaka; but it is obvious that the hard-line Muslims countries would support anyone confronting US/Israel. That doesn’t mean Arabs are SL friendly. Actually from what I hear Arabs are more racist than any whites. One of my Pakistani friends quite the job to work in Dubai. Although he is a strict Muslim, he was treated as lower class and he couldn’t take it there. He praise whites are much better when compare to those Arabs. However need to acknowledge that not many Arabs rich as we think, only those in power have all the oil money, many are poorer than many of us….

Just to make it short, to your article, Pakistan together with Chinna will do anything to SL to keep SL away from India as possible. Iran and others would do as much as possible to make strong team in UN arena and to defeat US/Western countries. On other hand SL would use Pakistan or those Muslims countries for their advantages. I doubt there are any real good feelings between them. Only relationship will keep us going is between us Sinhalese/Tamil/Muslims and may be with India/Maldives due to our historical ties and close proximity but no one else. They all will use us and we can use them but nothing more or less.

  4. Look how Sri Lankans view the Geneva vote…he…he…he…fortunately we do not have….Chinese….Burghers ..Africans…because they too will claim that the Chinese are friends of Sri Lankan chinese …..the Western World are friends of Sri Lankan Burghers..what a pandemonium there would have been……it is very difficult to understand how the Sr Lankan Society is seeing the issues based on ethnicity & Religion having gone through 30 years of war fought based on ethnicity……..just look my friends…….BLOOD is Red in all of us….

  5. It is very sad that our Muslim friend believes that serving Sinhala Buddhist nationalism against the Tamils will bring rewards for the Muslim community in Sri Lanka.

  6. The Muslim countries’ support of Sri Lanka in Geneva was not based on an objective analysis of the issues. Rather, it was a knee-jerk reaction based on the traditional enmity against America and Israel, which happened to co-sponsor the resolution.

  7. most of the countries purportedly to be muslim which supported srilanka in the recently held unhcr resolution on srilanka have a very poor trackrecord in respect for human rights.it does not surprise the world that they have supported srilanka because they very well know that if they dont support an autoractic and chauvinistic srilankan government today srilanka will not support them when they face the music in future.most of the countries who supported srilanka are sunni majority they have one yardstick for shia majority sunni ruled bahrain and sunni majority shia ruled syria.most of the countries led by saudi arabia crushed shia protestors whereas it has been supporting syrians who are opposing bashar assad government.probably they have forgotten the adage what is sauce to goose is sauce to gander.let us face the reality most of the muslim countries have a very poor track record when it comes to human rights, democracy, religious tolerance.let us face the reality srilanka as a nation cannot look at middle eastern countries as a model to emulate rather it has to look at western countries which enviable record on human rights despite certain short comings.

  8. Dear Farook, decisions have to be taken based on the facts relating to the issue before you. Most of us Tamils are with Palestine. But in the case of the American resolution it should not have been opposed by the Muslim countries just because it was brought by the Americans. What is the difficulty in implementing the recommendations of its own LLRC? Are we not facing the problems mentioned in the report? Will not you as a Journalist enjoy freedom to express your views or will you write only what the rulers like to read? Are you happy that there were and there are so many Muslim Ministers in the successive governments including Mr.Rishard Badiuddin, former resetllement minister(and Rauf Hakim) who was present in Geneva as well, but did nothing towards the Muslims expelled from Jaffna. Why blame others. It was not a resolution against the people of SL or against the GOSL even.It was only encouraging good governance in Sri Lanka to the betterment of all the communities which no doubt includes Muslims and their ministers. Are you not aware that in destroying the ltte thosands of innocent Tamils were also targetted and killed and Humanitarian law was violated.

  9. Allegiances and support from one country to another in international politics changes from time to time and depending on issues. India supported Sri Lanka when the earlier resolution was brought in the UNHRC sessions in 2009 and it went the other way in this year. Muslim countries that supported Sri Lanka too they have their own reasons. To assume that it was due to absolute sincerity towards Sri Lanka would be mis-leading. What is necessary is for Sri Lanka is to correct its course of politics which has caused dissatisfaction within various sections of the people, be it Sinhalese, Tamils or Muslims. This negative political trend will have to be changed so that there will be unity in the country and it could move forward as a united and stable nation without wanting to depend on this or that country to face issues internationally. Sri Lanka must take a lesson from Malayasia which reviews its policies periodically to strengthen harmony between the native Malays, Chinese, Tamils and others so that mistakes could be rectified. This measure ensures the stability and strength of Malaysia and no other country interferes into the affairs of Malaysia.

  10. “It is very sad that our Muslim friend believes that serving Sinhala Buddhist nationalism against the Tamils will bring rewards for the Muslim community in Sri Lanka”

Sinhala buddhist nationalists do not make up majority of electorate. For Tamils and Muslims to survive in Sri Lanka they need to unite with each other and moderate Sinhalese in order to stop the nationalists from coming to power and ruining the country by setting it on a collision course with former friends in the West and India. The stupid Prabhakaran obviously did not understand this point (even the Norweigians bemoaned his lack of knowledge of politics and international affairs) so expelled the Muslims who naturally became closer to nationalist camp. Hopefully with the LTTE out the picture, the TNA can seek to rectify previous blunders and build alliances with Muslims, Up-Country Tamils and educated, liberal Sinhalese.

  11. This is one of very few articles in hundreds of websites that drew only factual arguments against it, rather than invectives and contemptuous comments. I don’t know whether DBS picked up only healthier comments discarding the insults and invectives. Anyway this is a good sign. DBS, please encourage this kind of comments in your site.

  12. Muslims in and out side the country always supported Sri lanka. There are many great muslim sons bravely fought against tamil tiget terrorists. We will never forget graet muslim sons like A.F. lafir a Sri lankan army officer who was the commanding officer of the 1st Special force regiment. colonal lafir played a major role in the development of SF combat tracker team. He was awarded Parama Weera Vibushanaya, the highest award for valour of the sri lankan army. He sacrificed his life for the sake of mother lanka. this is just one example.

Even in common society muslims live peacefully with Sinhalese. So if any out side threat to our country,of course all Sinhalese, muslims, tamils should get together by the name of our motherland.

I have seen lot of tamils from out side the country shedding crocadile teras on the tamils in Sri lanka. Just one question I have for them. tell me even one single thing you have done for the innocent tamils in the north? You have done and offered lot of things to tamil tiger terrorists but nothing for nothern tamils. It is time for you to come to Sri lanka and see the truth by your own eyes how goverment developing the life standard of tamils.

  13. Hello Sinhalese,

Have a look at the conclusion of the writer. please read it many times for better understanding.

” Isn’t it time that the country as a whole and the ultra nationalist who got into powerful positions, open their eyes and realize the reality and change their views on local Muslims and Muslim countries in their own interests and in the interest of the country? “

  14. The title’s reference to “Sri Lanka’s” may be interpreted or misinterpreted as “Sri Lanka government’s” that
predominantly represents non-Tamils or “ Sri Lanka citizens’ ” includes all population including Tamils. The overwhelming majority of Tamils would probably take exception for the later interpretation. Wouldn’t the title be more precise and appropriate if perhaps revised as “UNHRC vote in Geneva shows that Muslim countries were Sri Lanka government’s sincere friends”? Or “UNHRC vote in Geneva shows that Muslim countries were essentially non-Tamil Sri Lankans’ sincere friends”?

One of the reasons for the vote may be that most of the the Muslim countries do not strictly and fully subscribe to the international human rights values and these countries do not fully embrace or fully appreciate them. Some of them do not even give basic equal rights to women by using some excuses and these countries are supposedly qualified to make objective and serious judgments on other countries. What a canard? It is obvious that they have vested self interests in voting against these kinds of resolutions against another country because not only they are not strictly adhering to these rights and they themselves are rights violators to some extent but also they are hoping to get the reciprocal vote of Sri Lanka if and when they need support from other countries including Sri Lanka. This is akin to you scratch my back and I scratch yours, like partners in violations. Furthermore, some of these countries have involuntary reaction against any U.S. led effort or resolution partly for local political consumption and exploitation. These countries in fact voted against the interests of Tamils of Sri Lanka by denying justice to war victims, against further investigations to find out about the alleged war crimes and massive civilian killings, against accountability, against pressing the government to implement LLRC recommendations and work out a political solution to the national problem. These acts certainly would not be interpreted as acts of sincere friends by the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Some of these Muslim countries lack the good measure of conscience because even though they knew that heavy artilleries and heavy offensive weapons they supplied to Sri Lanka also used to kill thousands of innocent civilians, yet they continued to supply undeterred without any care or concern to the well being of innocent civilian. What is the price for humanity? These countries have not expressed concern or sympathy for the massive civilian sufferings and deaths either. Furthermore, they have not discussed the urgency to solve the national question with SLG or pressed SLG on this matter. These countries are like minded countries that respect and protect human rights to only a limited extent that suits the needs of the governments or autocratic rulers.

It troubling that the author is touting the heavy military artilleries heavy offensive weapons supplied by some of these Muslim countries without any regard to the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians caused by the same weapons. It was good and appropriate the author was rightfully discussing about the Palestinian issue in the Middle East extensively but failed to mention the political solution to the national problem and aspirations of Tamils who are in Sri Lanka and are living at much closer distance.

Perhaps the author is used to writing for government media and thereby suffers from lack of objectivity, fair and balance. It would have been better if the author had maintained fair and balance to include the complete storey that covers all relevant aspects of the subject and the associated issues by including the good, the bad and the ugly!

  15. I am amazed by the degree of hypocrisy. Not for the first time though.

Israel first sold high-tech weapons to effectivley destroy the LTTE in Sri Lanka.

Then co-sponsored the US resolution against Sri Lanka at UNHRC (an organisation Israel absolutely despises). Numerous resolutions against Israel have been passed precisely at the UNHRC. Due to Israel’s horrendous crimes against impoverished, defenceless Palestinians for 60 years.

Agree with Prof. GL for once. This is not about respect for Human Rights. But, geo-political interests. Shame!

Thank you Islamic world for your support. Sri Lanka will not forget. Hopefully.

Sri Lanka please implement LLRC at once to build a dignified naton. For the good of our own people. Not at the behest of Western countries.

  16. The heading “UNHRC vote in Geneva shows that Muslim countries were Sri Lanka’s sincere friends” itself is far beyond from the truth.

The US sponsored UNHRC resolution against SL may have been viewed by the countries in the world in 4 different angles.

    1. The Anti-American clan.
    2. The Pro-American clan
    3. The Human rights violators.
    4. The justcie seeking nations. – Do we really have any countries in this category?

We all know that where the most of the Muslim nations in the world stand. They are either Anti-American or Human rights violators. The only US muslim friend in the middle east is a known Human rights violator, and could not support the resolution.

  17. Sadly this Muslim countries voted for Holocaust denial of over killing 40,000 innocent tamils. Without knowing the Srilanka hidden agenda to
reducing tamil population in NE by mass killing, occupying tamil lands, militarisation and sinhala colonisation, indirectly threaten them to leave the
country or place where they live; this countries voted for Srilanka is grate danger for tamil population in future by saying yes to continue Genocide
of minority tamils. If Srilanka state and majority do the mass killing again on minorities this muslim countries never going to protect innocent human beings.Anti-Americanism or Anti-Christianity shouldn’t support sinhala buddhist chauvinist to bring calculated events on minority Tamils,Muslims
or Christians in Srilanka. At least once they have to get punished for their actions internationally to not continue any GOSL in future their duplicity
    and bad Karama forever.

  18. Communalism was at its peak in this war against LTTE although nothing of what happened in 83 didn’t raise its
head thanks to many realities and well controlled mechanisms. For Ultra nationalists, this was a war between
Sinhala and Tamils and this is their politics.By embracing this group into its fold the govt has clearly
indicated that “we have some space for you.”So the message this author is sending is,mainly to this group I suppose. He’s telling them “look buddy if it’s not for us you lost deposit.”Nothing but truth.50% votes against, was from muslim countries. There are varying reasons for voting in favour of Srilanka and against the resolution which anyway succeded with a majority. One thing is clear and that is,this resolution is for all peace loving communities, including suffering sections of silent sinhala majority. There are govt ministers who claim “we only lost by one.”So it’s timely I think someone thought to claim a share though the popular saying goes as “victory has thousand fathers and defeat is an orphan.”

  19. most of the messages here we can see even though the Arab world have supported to Sri Lanka because of the large number of Demonstration held in Srilanka near there mission and the sucessfull tour made by the government officials .
Most of the Arab countries who supported the Srilanka they are American Allies however in this case they have supported Srilanka its because of the Srilankan Muslim. you can see allways in the past history Arab world have supported Srilankan Muslims by the Providing fund, by helping in giving jobs, building in fracture,, those slain leaders Saddam Hussein, Ghadafi, they haven ginven historical support in Srilanka, that why Still Al the Srilankan including non muslims they still love them. It was great thing that Srilanka allways supported the palestine issue
Muslims in Srilanka never say they are Tamils, eventhogh they speak Tamil, They say there Muslim, this the good example to proove that Muslims are not with LTTE,Our Identy is MUSLIM, not Tamil

  20. Dear Farook, your article is indeed factual & very interesting, Muslim world has always been friendly with Sri Lanka mainly because of Mrs.Bandaranaike\’s foreign policy & added to that now Mahinda presidency. MR was the founding president of SL-Palestine Friendship Association, & he held it for 30 years.
On the other hand though Sri Lanka is not a Muslim country, Islam is never rediculed, attacked, mistreted by Majority Buddhists who make up 70% of population, so there are no any complains carried to Muslim Countries by their Diplomats in Colombo who observes it first hand, whereas in many non muslim countries Islam is rediculed. ( just go by the books wrtten, cartoons drawn, poems written attacking Prophet Mohomed in the West)

Another reason for Muslim countries to support Sri Lanka at UNHRC was US\’s naked double standards on human rights. US itself goes scot free after killing over 01 million muslims in Iraq & Afgahistan during last 15 years, in addition to killing over 04 million Buddhists in Vietnam during 1964-1974, further as usual very next day after resolutinn against Sri Lanka at UNHRC, US alone supported Israel at Geneva when all other 39 countries voted against Israel at UNHRC resolution condemning Israelon human rights. Muslim countries in the world are not blind to those.

  22. Ramanan says,
“It is very sad that our Muslim friend believes that serving Sinhala Buddhist nationalism against the Tamils will bring rewards for the Muslim community in Sri Lanka”

My dear Ramanan, some of the most powerful politicians are Muslims. The reason is they did not do communual politics. The uslim leaders like Baker Marker, Fowzie, MH Mohommed depend on the sinhala vote base to get in to parliment. They have won the confidence of the sinhala people. They suffered enourmously at the hands of the LTTE an the other Tamil groups. So why should not they support the sinhala people.

  23. Come now, let’s be objective! It’s not that the Muslim countries love Lanka, or more to the point, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime, but rather that, they just hate the US more for its Palestine, Mid East, Af-Pak policies!
If the Muslims countries actually loved the people of Lanka who are increasingly seeing the emergence of the Rajapakse Dictatorship they would actually have voted for the US resolution which is also aimed at halting the emergence of the Rajapakse dictatorship. Indeed the US resolution at Geneva is in the interest of the Lankan people tho’ of course not the Rajapakse regime and its cronies and Muslim countries that love Lanka should have voted for it!

  24. [Mrs. Bandaranaike pledged in her election manifesto in 1970 that she would shut down the Israeli Mission in Colombo if she was voted to power.]

PROBABLY THE ONLY WORTHWILE THING SHE EVER DID.

[President J.R.Jayawardene declared arrogantly that he would bring the Israelis to crush the Tamil Tigers and the Muslim members could leave the government if they disagree.]

SINHALA BHUDDHIST LEADERS NEVER UNDERSTOOD THAT THE THOSE WHO ARE NOT SINHALA BHUDHIST ARE ALSO SRILANKANS AND THEIR FEELINGS MUST BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHEN MAKING DECISIONS.THEIR ABSOLUTE INSENSITIVITY AND ARROGANCE DEFIES BELIEF AND IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE CURRENT MESS.

[In the footstep of Late President Jayewardene, equally pro western Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe’s government was perhaps the only third world government in the word to support the American invasion of Iraq which turned the hapless nation into a grave yard. LIKE UNCLE,LIKE NEPHEW.THAT IS WHY THIS MAN WHO HAS TAKEN THE UNP TO DEFEAT AFTER DEFEAT SHOULD RESIGN AND LET THE UNP MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT ELECT A NEW LEADER,PROBABLY SAJIT PREMEDASA.A TRUE LEADER MUST BE SENSITIVE TO ALL SRILANKANS LEGITIMATE FEELINGS.TO SUPPORT AN INVASION OF A MUSLIM COUNTRY OR SUPPORT ISRAEL WHICH IS BULLYING THE PALESTINIANS,WHILE WE HAVE SO MANY MUSLIMS HERE IS INSENSITIVE.

[Surprisingly our new found friend the Zionist state of Israel co-sponsored the US resolution.]

I DON’T KNOW WHY THE US GOT THIS COUNTRY WHICH DOES NOT RESPECT ANY RESOLUTIONS AGAINST IT IN THE UNHCR,TO CO SPONSOR THIS RESOLUTION.WHAT IS OUR DIASPORA DOING ALLOWING A COUNTRY LIKE ISRAEL TO COSPONSOR THIS RESOLUTION.THEY SHOULD HAVE INSISTED THAT AN ASIAN COUNTRY OTHER THAN ISRAEL CO SPONSOR THE RESOLUTION,MAYBE INDIA OR JAPAN.DO A JOB PROPERLY,EVEN IF IT TAKES LONGER.NOW TAMILS HAVE ALIENATED MORE THAN A BILLION MUSLIMS FOR 6 MILLION JEWS.DO THE MATHS HERE,BECAUSE IT IS GOING TO COME BACK TO BITE US ONE DAY.TAMILS SHOULD KEEP ISRAEL AT ARMS LENGH AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM.THE WAY THEY TREAT THE PALESTINIANS IS THE SAME WAY THE SINHALESE HAVE TREATED US.EVEN OBAMA IS DISGUSTED WITH BENJAMIN NETANYAHU’S ARROGANT ATTITUDE WHICH IS THE SAME AS THE RAJAPAKSHE’S ATTITUDE,BUT IS UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING BECAUSE OF THE POWERFUL JEWISH LOBBY IN NEW YORK.

  29. I am not in favour of the LTTE because they proved to be a ruthless organization even killing the very Tamil people they claimed to represent. If they were against the Sinhalese, they were even foolish to isolate the Muslim who also suffered under them.
Having said that, true the LTTE came into being and ended up as a terrorist group. However, one cannot forget the reason for the creation of such a group. If my understanding is right, the Sinhala Language as the official language effected literally all non-Sinhalese speaking. I’ve seen them cry when they were deprived of salary increments just because they did not pass the proficiency exam while a Sinhalese peon didn’t even have to do any exam to claim his salary increment. Their feelings were just smouldering. Then when the army molested Tamil women in Jaffna, that was the last straw! The bodies of nine army soldiers were brought to Colombo and I witnessed the attack on Tamils in the most violent manner by the Sinhalese (I lived in Wellawatte at that time).
It is strange that people wish to forget all these while debating so many issues that have arising as a result of the past issues. Now that the war is over the Muslims now feel very insecure because, yes they felt whether they would be next. Latest developments do indicate this possibility and the government should realize that everyone has suffered in this country – the Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslims and others and that we deserve peace. Chauvinism should be checked before peace is disrupted once again. The danger is that chauvinism can benefit only the majority community and whether the government would do anything about it if it wishes to stay popular.
