Joint Opposition MP Geetha Kumarasinghe says defeated politician Piyasena Gamage wants to pull her down. “He was behind all this. He is waiting eagerly to occupy my seat in Parliament,” she said.

Excerpts:

Q:

What will happen next?

A:

I am waiting until I am delivered justice. I am a strong woman. I will not give up politics even if someone tries to drag me down. My decisions were in accordance with my conscience. I never went after money and the people of this country know that Geetha Kumarasinghe is a woman with genuine policies who speaks boldly. I am in their hearts and no one can change it. No one can buy it too.

Q;

Who are you alluding to when you say someone is trying to drag you down?

A:
I am not alluding. I directly say that the defeated politician Piyasena Gamage wants to pull me down. He was behind all these. He was waiting eagerly to occupy on my seat in Parliament. He received 20,000 votes less than me. He was rejected by the people.

Q;

Do you have evidence to accuse former Minister Piyasena Gamage?

A:
Who else wants to do this? The four who filed petitions against me are his supporters.

Q:

Can you prove this charge?

A:

Yes. One is the brother-in-law of the defeated minister. Another one is the person who was doing the minister’s contracts. Third owns a quarry which has a legal problem. The minister has promised him to resolve it. The fourth is a person who has worked in cooperatives. He was the arch rival of Piyasena in the past but now close friends.

Q;

But, they promise to support you in future elections…

A:

What fairytales are these? How can they support me while dragging my feet? They are Piyasena Gamage’s men.

Q;

Do you think you would face any of these problems if you joined the government?

A:

I was invited by bigwigs of the government. I could have taken a Deputy Minister post too. Some promised to take care of my case too. I am not a woman of that sort. I have hopes only about the legal redress. When someone invites me to the government, I burst out in laughter. I would rather give up the MP position than join the government.

Q;

Some say there is no proof of Geetha withdrawing the dual citizenship?

A:

I applied to withdraw it immediately before the nomination papers were signed in 2015. My request was granted and I can prove it.

Q:
Then, why were you accused?

A:

That is the problem. They may be doing so because I am a woman. Benthara-Elpitiya is an electorate which is very difficult to be organized. I served the people of that seat for 16 years because the electorate had no representation for 16 years. I was elected to Parliament with a high number of preferential votes because of that. Gayantha Karunathilaka of the UNP also received 13,000 votes less than me. I defeated him too. It was a massive victory for me. I am the only woman MP from the Southern Province. That can be the reason why men want to see me dragged down.

Q:

Don’t you think that now it is a good time for you to act in a movie, earn some money, and live in Switzerland?

A:

I have never thought of doing that and in future also I will not think of doing that. I have earned money and spent. I have property. I married a Swiss national. He is very rich and I inherited a lot of money and property from that marriage. I had fame, houses, garment factories, a Ferrari and all. Politicians in Sri Lanka might not earn as much money even if they steal public money their entire life. I am not after material assets. I dedicated all of them for politics. I have given many jobs. Many families depended on them. On the other hand, I don’t like to live in Switzerland. I have never lived there for more than amonth.

Q:

You have lost many things and what have you gained from politics?

A:

Self-satisfaction is bigger than that. I created problems in family life too due to politics. My husband did not like the fact that I relinquished the Swiss citizenship for the sake of politics. He never forgave me for that obstinate decision. My daughter also disliked that decision.

I entered cinema without anybody’s help, thanks to my talent. I was born and brought up in a village. Only my mother and younger brother helped me to enter politics. I came this far amidst objections of all the others. I engaged in clean politics which was right according to my conscience. That can be the reason for this.

Q:
Are you frustrated?

A:

Yes. I am frustrated about what is being done to me. This is a slap on the face of all women representatives.

Q:

Are you the only dual citizen in Parliament?

A:

Are you crazy? There are many others too. Some are ministers. There are two such MPs of TNA. I know one minister who has Swiss citizenship. He is no citizen here because the citizenship here is annulled when one becomes a Switzerland citizen. They are hiding these terrible secrets. But, they will be exposed one day. I will go there and check this if necessary and expose it. They talk like lions here while being fraudsters. I too could have done so but I did not.
