Jeeves Wijesuriya, a Sri Lankan junior doctor from London, was hailed as a hero as he was the first physician to attend to those injured following the Westminster parliament terrorist attack last week.
Dr. Wijesuriya who specializes in General Practice was not on duty at the time, but was nearby and rushed to the scene when he heard about the attack.
“I heard the screaming and ran to help those injured”, he told Buzzfeed News.
“Hems [helicopter emergency services], paramedics and police worked with incredible effort as we tried to save the lives of both the officer and the assailant. We spent some time trying to resuscitate them both,” he added.
Police Officer Keith Palmer who was on duty at the British Parliament was stabbed by the terrorist, who was shot at by another police officer. They both died at the scene despite the efforts of Dr. Wijesuriya and other paramedics to save them.
After the incident, Dr. Wijesuriya tweeted he was “home safe” and “left humbled by the incredible efforts of those involved”.
